15.5x38's vs. 16.9x38's

Got a 460 Farmall with 15.5x38's thats due for new tires. I'd like something a little wider without making the tractor sit higher in the rear. Would 16.9x38's do the trick? They look taller. Would they fit the same rim as a 15.5?

Instead of guessing tire height, it took almost two minutes to find the exact numbers. 11.2x38=57.0"dia 12.4x38=59.0 13.6x38=61.5 14.9x38=64.0 15.5x38=61.0 16.9x38=66.3 18.4x38=69.3 As you can see the 15.5x38 is a short *ssed low profile tire to be used where extra width is required without increasing tire dia. The shorter stiff sidewalls make the 15.5x38 a good pulling tire. If you want more width without gaining height. The rims will have to be swapped out for 30" dia units.

I like the part about sliding out of the seat because the tires are so much taller. That is really funny! The 14.9 & 16.9's are the same height, while the 13.6 & 15.5's are the same height. I have run 16.9's on my M for years.
I gave up on the 14.9's because they don't have enough grip.

I guess I don't get it. If you don't have enough grip with 14.9's on an M, I'm thinkin' you need more weight. I can't see how a 16.9 would work any better. 14.9's on an M is quite a bit of tire.

No a 16.9 is not the same higth as a 14.9 it is much taller . as i have had both . Set as set of both side by side or use your tapemassure . I put the 16.9's on to go play as eveybody wanted bigger tires to be competive well while all of us were putting bigger tires on the guys that already had them were building there motors to stay one setp ahead of the rest . So the Stock antique tractor pullen was no longer STOCK . If ya can't get enough traction with a 14'9 on a M-560 then ya had best add some weight or why no just put a set of 30.5 32's on with a big set of floaters on the ft. then ya can sell the boat and just use the tractor for water skien .

I made the mistake of putting 16.9x38's on my S/MTA and ya always sliding out of the seat , i knew i shopuld have went with the 14.9x38's on a 14 inch rim they are a littel taller then the 15.5 as it is the same higth as the 13.6 x38 and a 460 always looks like it is running up hill with 15.5 .

I have had 15.5x38"s on my 460 for years and I call it the idea tire for it. I have not spun out anytime will run out of engine first, no wheel weights or fluid. I used to pull a 7 ft Roam Offset with it.

I went from 15.5x 38 not loaded to 14.9 loaded. It was like a new tractor as far as pulling and traction, but it did make her work a heck of a lot harder, taller tire. I have a 544 I would go with 14.9's on a 460 before 16.9's, a 460 is only 45-49 hp, right. JMHO

I think that tractor was originally with 13.6x38s. If I were you, I'd look at 14.9x38. They have a larger circumference than the 15.5, but smaller than the 16.9. The 15.5 has shorter sidewall than either of the other tires.

the 15-5's should be mounted on either a 14 or 15 inch rim.. I will say that 16.9's will not fit on a 14 inch rim and look reasonable (the tire looks bulging)

Also, 16.9's are about 2 inchews taller. Your call, but I think the 460 will be very underpowered with the bigger tires.

I disagree- common practice is that you can go an inch wider or narrower than the rim measurement. Confusion comes from old-size and new-size marking. The decimal dimensions are new size- the bulge of the tire, not the dimension at the rim (bead). A 16.9 tire is an old-size 15 inch tire, so will fit ok on a 14 inch rim. Yes, height will be different, increasing ground speed, but it works fine.

I feel I have to correct misinformation here. The new size tires are measured at the widest part of the tire sidewall when mounted on the proper width rim. The old size was measured at the widest part of the TREAD, not thr rim bead.

16.9 tire is a new size that replaced the 15X38. The 15.5X38 tire was a newly developed, low profile tire that was developed to be a low profile tire with a wider tread that matched the circumference of the 13.6X38 tire.

15.5X38 is an excellent tire for the 40 to 60 horsepower tractor. Gets my vote.... Gene

I think it is funny that people think the "new" sizes are the 12.4, 13.6, 14.9 etc. These sizes have been around for at least 35 years. I know. I changed my first one in 1972. The sizes we are going to be seeing in the very near future will be metric sizes, same as the sizes on your car or light truck. I just got a chuckle out of the "new" sizes. JohnG
