Went to grab a bale the other day and this old grapple all of a sudden just split herself into two pieces and promply unhooked from the quick tach.

Thought the silly thing felt a little "goosey" all morning. :>)

Anyhoo, had another, swapped 'em out and got the hay hauled in and put away.

DUMB question, why do you unroll your round bales. I put mine in round bale feeder and let the just eat away on it no fuss no mess. and they don't crab on it.

Some of the best hay we ever had was when we planted alfalfa in wheat stubble in the fall. Next spring we had about half volenteer wheat and half alfalfa. Now that was good feed.

Is that the wheat ya rolled up ? does it look like it is gona make good feed ?I rolled some up for a guy a few yrs. back that he planted to thick , I tryed to get some of it but he would`nt part with any . I`ve got some oats to roll up in the next few days , wont be alot there , just now starting to get some rain sence planting season .

Ah, ya just need to get a bale spear ionstead, then there's only 2 hydraulics you need to watch instead of 3 levers.. ;-) Don't have to worry about the bale rolling back on ya either cause you stab it right through the heart of the bale.

How do you unroll a bale with a spear? No Don, once you get used to a grapple you would never go back to a spear. One hand will "watch" all three levers. All the real cowmen use grapples.

Kentucky Way to unroll a round bale,

1) Drive up hill, park on side of hill
2) Cut bale twine if you choose
3) Drop bale off of spear
4) Pray to god that cows are smart enough to move out of the way!
5) If bale does not unroll, repeat steps 1-4!

That's easy- you don't! If we have to feed round bales, we put the whole thing in the feeder and let the cows at it. It takes them a full day (2 feedings) to pull one apart. Lasts longer than if we give them only 1/2 a big square 2X/day and they eat it up.

Seems like it wouldn't be an advantage to have it take longer for the cows to eat it- isn't the idea (with dairy cows) to get as much feed into them as easily as you can, so they produce more milk?

Not when the gorge themselves stupid. We've always limited their intake to a point so we don't have to try and tie in really stupid animals. They've all got their spot in the barn and when they're stuffed, none of them go where they belong.

This is how I haul and unroll bales up here in MN. Haul one on front and back then unroll on the back.

You use the front tractor tire or better yet get a spear for the truck pour a little gravel and build an unroller for the front bumper.

You unroll a bale with a spear by setting the bale on the ground, stomping on just one brake (your choice), idle up the tractor, and put it into the fastest reverse ya got!! Works reeel good, sorta like a round buffet table for the cows.

This is what the real crackhead cowboys do :)

Don't know about them grappel deals as we have the skid steer with the spear and the three point spear with a hyd. cyl. for a top link , but would like to find a 2250 loader and add a spear on it then ya could grab two at a time . Back when my buddy and i first started doing hay this year i was raken one field and saw his nephew come in and pull up by the barn and then left , could not for the life of me figure what he was doing after we started baling i went to put the spear on the skidsteer and it was missing sooo back to plan B i put the manuar forks on and was getting two bales at a time use half the prongs on each bale worke slick but ya had to stab then just wright to sink the forks in .

No use covering the things out here. Nothing to hurt 'em; it is so darned dry. :>(

I sold hay one time; about 1972 or there abouts. Usually, just keep it over because some years there is no hay at all.
