Old barn, very dry wood. The goal is weatherproofing with the added benefit of less insects. Ease of application also a plus. Any suggestions? Aaron

Used motor oil would be a very bad idea for many reasons, the first and foremost would be the increased risk of spontaneous combustion. If you don't think it can happen you are wrong because I have put out two barn fires that went up due to this very treatment within my ten years on the fire department.

I can see people maybe having done this LONG ago, when they didn't know any better, and couldn't afford any better, but can you REALLY think this would be healthy for the environment(can you say"polluted run-off")your children/grandchildren breathing in the fumes from an oil soaked barn, (can you say CANCER?) your animals or YOU and your wife??
Lord knows there are ENOUGH things out in this world waiting to kill you, do you need to ADD to it? What effect would it have on your HEALTH Insurance policy or LIFE insurance policy?

One other question, out of curiousity- what does your WIFE have to say about this?

Prolonged exposure to used motor oil has been found to cause cancer in labratory rats. Read the next bottle of oil you buy.

Your'e right, I AM glad that I'm not, and I'm sorry you didn't know any of that was bad for you or anybody/anything else!!!

The general consensus on the forum seems to be to NOT use the oil... GO FIGURE

The proof is "in the pudding" so to speak... I presume YOUR own barn must be oil soaked also, due to your obviously blatant lack of brain cells AND manners.

I bid you good'day, cretin! (Look it up, if you can, since I presume your own species has not evolved enough to have opposable thumbs due to a problem in your environment, OIL SOAKED BUILDINGS!)

In these more modern times it would be possible being denied an insurance claim because of doing that and I could also visualize having the barn and site being declared a toxic site with you paying for having it removed plus paying for damaging your neighbor's wells. They would likely see a free lunch too and sue for something or other.
Insurance companies and others view a deliberate dstructive act in a different light than we might.
After all that you might wish you chose a different path.

In my section of West Virginia this was commonly done from the time tractors & trucks first came to the farms until the '50's when the old-timers left the farms. Was a good way to get rid of the oil & save the buildings. Nobody I ever heard of lost a barn because of oil & nothing stops'em from burning once they start anyway. We put it on with mops, brushes, rags, etc. BTW those barns are still there long after their painters have passed away.

My section of Connecticut has many barns that have been up for 200 years, never painted or other home remedies like oiling. Two keys are a good roof to keep the rain off, and a foundation to keep the water drained away. Once the roof goes, the barn will go withing a decade or so even if it stood the last 200.

And I reckon you're right, you've never lost a barn from being soaked in oil. Just lost them faster and with less left over afterwards. I live in an area with a lot of old brick & heavy timber textile mills with wood floors soaked in machinery oil that's dripped from the machines over the years, and that's always been an observation once they get going how fast the fire spreads.

I try and try and try and try for years to keep little oil and grease stains off of my wooden barn floor, I get on here, and I see a post in which someone wants to spray his whole barn with used motor oil! DEAR LORD!

I'm assuming you want to do this in order to grow tumors in your livestock. Problem is, tumorous meat really doesn't command that high a price in most areas.

Just put a match to it now, that will save all the work spraying it with an accelerant. Honestly, do you not realize how dangerous an oil soaked barn is?

I think it's ok if the barn is at least 50 ft. away from your well, that way it takes years before all those heavy metals get into your water. Why waste all that old oil on that barn, just throw it on the driveway to keep the dust down. They used to use some kind of petrolium mix on circus tents too, till they found out it was flamable.

Tractor supply barn paint at a reasonable cost.

Have used oil based barn paint in the past- don"t care for the mess. Latex is much nicer.

If you are looking for cheap way to paint try your local hazardous waste facility- they get lots of used paint that is still good.

Check with the EPA, they can tell you the best way to spray used motor oil on your barn. I'll bet they have a brochure on that very subject.

I have never used motor oil for this, but I would think you could spray it on with an airless paint sprayer, or a hand pump garden sprayer may also work. I use a garden sprayer to put on Thompson Water Seal and it worked well for me. You may have to thin your oil down some with diesel fuel or kerosene to get to spray.

The hand pump weed sprayer should work. I tap in an air line to my compresser and set the pressure regulator to about 10 lbs or so. You might have to thin the oil a bit.

The old air over water extinguishers would be an excellent way to apply the oil or possible oil/diesel mix. Just put in mix and charge wth air and spray away. Personally I would use a solvent gun, have to fill more often but more control. Check with your epa guys, I think they will say you are ok to do this.

I'll bet your insurance agent would have a different idea, I would say many fire extinguishers would be needed.
