I have a 99 GMC safari van, with a v 6. I think the chev. Astro has the same engine. My van has 60,000 miles. It didn't pass tha smog inspection, because of high hydrocabons. The smog guy said to change plugs, and maybe plug wires. I know the plugs need changing, but what about the wires? Do the wires usuallg go bad, in 60,000 mi, or is it the age around 8 years. What else may give high hydrocarbons, or unburned fuel? Thanks for any help. Stan

wires are $25-$65 at napa. just change them. if they are original you'll likely ruin them trying to get them off the plugs. Buy a tube of dielectric tune up grease, squirt a generous amount in the wire boots of the new wires. they will never stick, plus you'll be able to feel the terminal click onto the plugs. the tiny tube they supply in the kit is worthless.

I would have changed the plugs and wires 30,000 miles ago if it was me assuming you have had it since it was new. Plugs might be 8-12 dollars for a good set. I recomend Bosch Platniums. Wires might be 10-15 dollars. Change em both.
