Strange year. Noticed a lot of poison Ivy growing in hay fields and even along areas of thick grass that are mown short regularly. Took hay cutting in late May and now the Ivy is really taking off - it has been pretty dry summer in Maryland so lately hay has been somewhat dormant. Hardly ever seen Ivy in fields the past years. Any one else having an unusual amount of poison Ivy growth? My hay fields are orchard grass and red clover, so a broad leaf herbicide would kill the clover - not sure what is best for the #@%&*! Ivy. Any suggestions before it gets really out of control? thanks - Itchy

why not just bale it up? Poison Ivy probably has more feed value than orchard grass. My cows and goats love it.

For broadcast spraying, I've found Crossbow to work the best of the things I've tried.

For spot spraying, 24D is quite effective. But since it kills everything else it touches, and drifts nicely, I just don't like using it much.

Roundup and the like, well, it irritates the plant for a day or two.

And for you, rub some Jewelweed on the itchy spots.

Spot spraying with roundup works the best.
Bought my place about 5 years ago, posion ivy everywhere. gone now. Be sure to gut the vines going up into the trees or it will just reseed the area.
dab straight roundup on the freshly cut vine and it will not come back.

Seems to be growing well here too. I discovered some of it along a stone wall that is the north property line, and is also in the middle the powerline right of way (they own it) tha bisects our place.

In '04, whils't putting up a fence, to keep the ATV's out and from ruining the crop of corn, I certainly found it, was extremely potent, left temporary deep pock mark like scars, worse than any other time I've had it in this lifetime. Made darned sure I knew what it looked like after that, and how to deal with it. There are things you can do, and you do have 10-15 minutes to wash it off before it sticks to you, using some sort of appropriate soap or solvent to cut it, I had to clear a path near it just recently and I remembered not to touch the tractor tires after the fact + washed my arms down real good just in case. It seems you have to break the plant to get the oil to flow.

The old stone wall kind of fades out in this area I described, at the north end of this corn field, and since I've been watching it grow since '04, with the hopes it will grow onto the fence, this year it does look healthy and is abundant. We don't have any other places where it would be favorable to grow, although I have wondered if letting it prosper in this one area would cause trouble elsewhere, I pity the fool who messes with that fence. The forestry company, Asplundh, wrapped up the restoration work after the new lines came through, was an excellent crew, they left me a gate to tie into there + another gate at the end of the road. I am aware that the oil from that plant, especially this patch, is extremely potent, concentrated and the residue lasts a very long time. I'd love to smear some on the gate, but I think the ATV crowd knows the deal here now, and my luck the wrong person would get it anyway, has been real quiet since I politely tossed 15 of them out, but it would certainly ruin ones day if they got the rash. Apparently, a small drop like the size of a pin head, is enought to make the planet itch ! Not sure if that is really true, but it is by far something I keep my distance from and take lots of precaution, the last bout of itching was enough for me I'll tell ya !

According to a network news item recently, poison ivy, unusually large growth, and unusually high toxisity this year is due to unusual weather conditions in your area. Be very careful in dealing with the stuff. According to the news cast, the plants are far nastier than usual. Be sure to was thoroughly after contact.

I think 2-4-D works the best. You can always mix some roundup in also. My Dad always says to put in a few drops of dish soap to make it stick on the leaf better for a better kill.

i gotta try the 2-4d and round up mix, thanks for the tip.i sprayed about a 10 days ago with the round up for poision ivy, got a good burn doen on a lot of the patches, but there was probably 20% that didnt seem affected. this stuff is really spread. igotta get a handle on it, the kids play in the timber, we have about 8 acres or so, trails cut, fishing in the creek, good kid fun. i showed em what it looks like, so they are careful, but i really prefer to get rid of it.

roundup makes a brush and ivy killer brew, works good, but Try gasoline first to see if works better, Gas is still cheaper then roundup.

Its bad in NE Ohio the last 2 years. I"ve had luck with Roundup but mix it STRONG. I think Ortho Brush-b-Gone is better for PIvy but I haven"t found it in bulk yet. I"m sure there are generics that are close that may come in bulk for less $.

Roundup, even in strong brews won't get poison ivy. It might knock the leaves off but it will come back. I got rid of some on my dad's place with Brush-B-Gone. Its labeled to do poison ivy and it did.

I've also killed the occasional plant with a splash of gasoline.

Same here up on the NY/PA border. Never seen so much of it. Big patches growing out of the hedgerows in the pastures.

Here in the north east its every where especially along stone walls. I rent my goats out to the neighbors to remove it. My goats will dig up the roots if they can, They just love this stuff. I am not allergic to it so I have to do all the milking. Four years ago I let two goats "clean" a 500' long stone wall next the house, the ivy never came back. Just another thought about weed control.

Roundup will kill your grass as well as the clover. If you do use roundup I have read that the best time on Ivy is when it is starting to flower. 2,4-D is some what effective and may not kill all the clover. You could add some Banvel (dicamba) to the 2,4-D and it might be more effective. If the clover is killed you could do a frost seeding next year (late winter, very early spring) and get the clover back.

Poison Ivy will be killed by brush killer. Most companies make a brush killer and many advertise it as a poin ivy and poison oak killer. It will not kill grass or clover. The best remedy for poison ivy is a weed called jewelweed that grows by streams and near riverbanks. The soap and some liquid forms can be bought at health food store and will stop PI in one day. Google jewelweed and read all about it.
