My 05 Chevy 3500 duramax with the 5 speed allison, 3.73 axles, and reg cab gets 25 mpg @ 55 mph, 22 mpg @ 60 mph, and 19.5 mpg @ 70 mph running empty. This is according to the computer which checks out with manual calculations. Pulling a trailer varies from 8.5 to 16 mpg depending on the load and speed. I really like the thing and love to drive it. You will love all the power.

Last summer I pulled a fifth wheel double header trailer with two 39 ' draper heads with an 06 Duramax dually and it handled the weight well but when I got up to 60 MPH the wind resistance really took a toll, so it really pulled the guts out of it. Most of the time I could maintain 65 but sometimes I couldn't do 60. Pulling away from a stop sign it could squalk the tires pulling the trailer so it seemed to have plenty of grunt. I also drove a daycab semi tractor with a 365 Cummins pulling an identical trailer and it was about head-to-head with the Duramax. I drove both of them about 2000 miles each and the fuel mileage seemed to be about the same between the two. Over the long haul the Chevy couldn't keep up with the semi because it needed fuel every 250 miles and of course the semi had bigger tanks. This is a pull that most pickups won't ever see because we were making the Duramax do something a semi should have been doing but it shows if you use your pickup like a semi you will get the mileage of a semi. The Duramax is not chipped. This year both trailers are on semi tractors. Jim

I have an 02 DMAX ext cab 4X4 , has 140,000 on it now . Bought it used 2 years ago last spring with 65,000 on it . Know where it came from and have all the service records on it . Nothing has been done to it except for two u-joints . Never been chipped reprogramed etc . I put a 4 inch exhaust system on it last March . I NEVER DID come close to 20 mpg although the previous owner claimed he got as high as 22 when he had it . Since I have owned it mileage is : 14-16 running around here , 16-18 on longer trips , 9-11 pulling gooseneck trailer 10-16,000 . I run 65-75mph with truck or trailer always . Tried running 60-65 , seemed to help a little , did get 18.5 mpg once . But that's too slow . Truck has plenty of power and has good pickup , cruises nicely at 75 on the interstates .

One thing I have never been able to understand with all these power chips , reprogramers etc is how increasing fuel to give more power can GIVE MORE MPG . I have been playing with diesels turbos injectors etc in my tractor pulling hobby for 35 yrs , the only way you make more power is with more fuel . That means more heat , more egt , more boost and all that . If the engine is designed for so much hp any more will some day do some damage .

I have a 06 Duramax extended cab 3/4 ton. Great truck as the other have said and it tows great. Towed about 6k pounds total with it awhile ago and it ran 70 down the highway pretty easy and I was getting about 15MPG per the DIC.

Don't beleive the folks who say they get 20+ on the highway driving between 65 - 75 MPH. I drive 80% highway and I get between 17 - 19 MPG unloaded. The 1 ton will probably get a little less since you have more rubber on the road.

By the way, the truck is for sale if you are interested in a 3/4 ton. I am in OH. Shoot me a email if you have anymore questions.

Morning,

I've an 07 4x4 extended cab that I love. It's quite, and drives great. I have the chip and intake/exhaust mods. It will tow like a dream and is very fast for playing around. I don't know why people keep telling me at the fuel pumps and other websites that they get 22-24 mpg unloaded on the highway. With very conservative driving on flat roads, my best ever was 19.5 on the highway. My modifications should, if you keep your foot out of it, do nothing but improve the engine's efficiency, and therefore economy. Realisticaly, expect around 19 on a road trip, 13 hauling and 17 around town.

My regular cab 03 2500HD 4x4 Dmax does get 22 to 24 MPG going down the interstate at 75 MPH unloaded. Pulling my 14000Lb goosneck it gets 14 to 18 MPG. But I have the ZF manual six speed. The allison robs around 50 HP just to turn it.

Never owned nor driven a Duramax. But I notice that the complaints are few and far between. I think that indicates good things.

We have an 06 at work, a 3500 duals crew cab etc. with the allison 6 speed. We haul large trailers with it and it has GOBS of power. We get about 10mpg towing. so far it's the best truck we've ever owned.
