O/T 89' F-150 power steering question

I just got my 89' f-150 back on the road after a 3 month down time. Before the down time it on occasion felt like there was a "catch" in the steering. During the rebuilds, all the steering links were found to be OK. But now after straightening out from a left turn, the truck wants to pull hard to the left. At first this felt like a brake caliper hanging up. but the calipers are free and there is no pulling from either side when stopping. Fluid level in the pump is OK and no unusual noise from the pump. Often it will be pulling to the left and then "break free" and steer normally and track straight down the road. My question is could there be or is there proportioning valve or equallizer valve in the steering box that is sticking or failing?

Steve, Check the steering column joints as they can cause the same problems if they are rusted or binding. Sometimes you can oil them and free them up but if that doesn"t work you will have to get the lower shaft assy from Ford. HTH Jf

I forget if the 89 had "king pins" or ball joints.
If it has "king pins" then one could be bad and easy to miss.
Also , I think this is the same thing Bob said, the radius rod bushings could be giving some and doing tricks on the steering when it wants to.
Any sign of abnormal tire wear on the front? (feathering, scalop, etc).
I really dont think it has to do with the pump but the steering box could be suspect if everything else checks out.

Does your truck have a steering stabilizer? If so, it may be "bad" and "hanging up".

Bob, This truck does not have the steering stabilizer.
Thanks.
