Sorry for OT, but I think of tractors the same way----IFIT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT. I have 2 cell phones. My occupation is OTR trucking. There areas of the country that one phone will have service, and the other will not---That is the reason for 2 phones. One phone is with Cellular 1. It has been less and less reliable. I cancelled the service and they want to charge for the next month's service, but I don't get service because my phone is of the old style (7 years old) and is not compatible with today's cellular systems. Usually it will not work anymore. So, I rarely can use it if I need to. Yet they insist I pay for the last month even if the phone service is not available. They say this will end in 2008. They think because they offered me new phones and new service plans that it is my fault that I chose to stick with what I have, and I owe them for service I do not get. I think i just got "SERVICED". I would sure like your opinions. Wayne

Now iam in no means siding with the cell phone company. However i used to work for a cell phone company. most companys bill a month in advance. which means they bill for service say from june 1 to july 1 however your calls are from may 1 to May 30. so say u cancel on june 15 you still have one more bill to pay (which you should only be charged for the 15 days). Just becasue u travel out of a phones service area doesnt mean u dont have to pay for service. Thats like deducting 10 days worth of payment off of your truck payment becasue u only drove your truck 20 days outta the month.

As far as not getting service inside of buildings or a house that can be expected, not all cell phone towers are in the same location and a cell phone tower only puts out a signal for 7 miles. Which everything from birds to trees to mountains to building materials etc impact your signal. Example with my phone in the new addition i built onto my house i only get 2 bars of signal. the rest of the house i have full signal. Also i had a big oak tree on the end of the house which is also the same side the tower is located only its 5 miles away. Winter time i would get full signal summer time about half (reason leaves in the summer and branchs in the winter) I have since had to cut down the tree and now i get full signal thru out the house.
We have to remember that with a cell phone there is no dedicated signal as with a landline phone.

If your phone is 7 years old, that probably means that you have been without a contract for at least 5 years. Without a contract you should only be charged on a month to month basis. I took both my phones from Cingular to Verizon 3 years ago. The final payment to Cingular was for the partial month when I switched companies. Since I wasn't in a contract at the time, I was under no obligation to stay with them.

Much happier with Verizon by the way...

I just spent a bunch of time dealing with the cell phone thing myself, I think I finally just got it worked out.

A big part of the change that will happen is that the FCC is allowing the cell companies to get rid of the analog mode for phones. The companies get to save money, but in lots of the rural areas that we travel through, thats all that is there. So I wouldnt be surprised if coverage in the country areas (unless you are near a new digital tower) gets worse after this coming January.

Also, I know in my cell contract it says that if I spend more than two months with more of half of my minutes roaming, they can cancel my service because it costs them too much.

I have cingular not because I like them, but I can see the tower from my front porch. I also had a falling out with Altel a few years ago, byt the store manager waved the early exit fee. About a year ago Cingular was canceling people that lived in an area that their service was coming through another co's. towersaid it was costing too much, how ever they require a early exit fee. Is that not a double standard.

Few years ago I got an additional cell phone with a different company than my old one, which was giving great service(Alltel,BTW) The new phone would not call from inside the house or inside local stores. The next day I took it back and got an Alltel. I had to eat the sign up fee, etc., but I got rid of the non performing phone. Then the next month I got a bill for the phone I had returned, called the company, they said I was supposed to pay for the phone service even if I had turned it in. I told them I had returned it because it didn't work, I only had it one day, had paid the sign up fee, and was not going to pay anything else. Haven't heard from them since, though someone suggested they might have put a bad mark on my credit rating. Don't know about that since I haven't asked for credit lately.

On the extra month's fee thing with your phone, I once looked into buying a car from a man who had leased one for his daughter. The leasing company said the man owed another month or two on his leasing contract, which he understood and was going to pay off. Then the leasing company said his contract called for him to pay an additional months payment after he turned in the car before he could buy the car to sell to me.I never could make leasing a car pay off on paper anyway and this reinforced my opinion. I dropped the idea of getting that car because of that and other complications such as an ex wife's name on the lease.
This extra month's rent stuff is something I guess we need to look out far.
