Thanks to all for the imformation. It looks like I need to change the battery cables to a heavy cable. I think I am going to stay with the 6 volt system. I will keep you posted on how I make out.

Check the output of your 6 volt generator. If it is like any I have ever tested it will pe putting out around 9 volts if it is good. Back in the late 40's and early 50'd a lot of 8 volt batteries were used because of the easier start in cold weather. No problem back then with burned points because of the 8 volt battery. I only have 7 Oliver 77's and three Oliver 66's now and all but one have 6 volt batteries. That one is a diesel and had been switched to one 12 volt rather than the two 6 volt. The 77 that I pulled, I bought an industrial six 6 volt. It is the size of two standard 6 volt and the one lasted a bunch of years before I replaced it. I buy them a TSC. Rural King has them also.

Aloha, If you rebuilt your engine, it will be tighter than before you rebuilt it. Check all you battery connections (must be clean and tight) and tune up your starter as well. Check your battery and make sure it is fully charged and of the correct type.

When you slip in 'Just rebiult motor.'

Did you fit a larger kit than standard?
Has the compression ratio been raised in any other way?

If you have, then change to 12 volt, if not sort out the present system. The general opinions on the board are more against 8 volt than for 6. If you look in the archives there will be heaps of posts on the subject. I would think if you compare posts favouring the 8 volt system, over 6 or 12, the percentage is very low.
Me, if it worked OK 50 years ago it should work OK now is the way I look at it. All my tractors are started with the crank handle and I don't 'swing' them, I just lift the handle.

you over hauled the engine. BUT did you even service the starter. and generator. take your starter off disasemble it carefully clean out all the copper dust and also put in mew brusshes clean the armeture and grease the bearings .and be shure to clean the mounting flange off paint so you get a good ground. don't forget the starter drive gear. do a clean on the generator also. it will help alot in cranking old art

8 volt bettery at best is a bandaid fix and the genny will not charge it up unless you twink the genny. So best thing its to fix the 6 volt system and yes it will work or switch to a 12 volt system. Thses old tractors have worked just fine on 6 volts for 30 plus years so its either a problem with your system or you hopped up the engine to a higher compression and if you did that you need to go to 12 volts

Mike, Im NOT a fan of the 8 volt system, its a band aid approach to cure a problem. If one insisted on converting to gain starting performance especially in cold weather, may as well go ahed n convert to the more standard 12 volt n be done with it..... ...

It wont harm a generator in the short run, it may run just a tad warmer n draw a few more field amps. However, whether or not the Voltage Regulator requires adjusting depends on what kind of system you have. If its a 2 coil VR with a cutout relay and a current only control relay, she could still charge an 8 volt battery. However, if the VR has a Voltage Control Relay it may need adjusted to better charge an 8 volt battery. If it were the simple 2 wire cutout relay ONLY it should charge with no adjustments.

NOTE an 8 volt battery will cause the 6 volt coil to draw a tad more amps n it can run just a bit hotter plus the points will burn up a lil sooner unless you add some ignition ballast. Likewise, 6 volt lights will burn real bright but burn up sooner.

In 6 volt systems you can gain starting RPM and performance by using the biggest heaviest highest CCA rated battery that will physically fit in the comparment PLUS use 00 gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables.

You should seriously consider switching to 12 volt unless you"re adamant about keeping it original. To get the most out of the 8 volt battery will take some adjustment on your generator to keep it fully charged. Also your lights have 6 volt bulbs in them.

I recently redid my 77 as stock with 6 volt. If I had to do it over I would have switched to 12 volt. My 2 cents worth.

replace all battery cables with big new cables, soldered ends and clean all connections
6 volt will be just fine then

It shouldn't.Somebody did it to one I had was a little weak.I took a 12 volt baterry and did a positive ground.Spun it like a top everytime.
