Might get them to last a while on Pelee Island or on Long Point Ontario. Almost as many frost free days as Victoria BC.

I visited the ORKNEY ISLANDS in north atlantic, north of scotland and there were palms growing, seems the gulf stream is close, keeping it warm,also 200 bu.per acre is common.

Southern California got a freeze last winter that lasted three nights and it killed alot of Palms. Especially King, Mexican Fan, and anything southern in origin. Only the Mediteranian type fared okay. It got down to 20 degrees one night. I've heard of palms in Canada, but those were wrapped and bedded for winter - alot of work as they grow bigger...Google USDA PLANTS to learn more.

In the early 80s, and I think some straggled onto the 90s, I remember seeing palm trees lining the channel to Rock Harbor, Orleans, Massachusetts -- on Cape Code. There's broad tidal flats (1/2 mile +) the channel crosses, and someone had the "brilliant" idea to use palm trees as the channel marker.

Now someone below said they'll live in a Zone 7 area but a harsh winter will kill 'em off and that describes Cape Cod pretty good -- usualy pretty mild being surrounded by ocean water on three sides, but occasionally join the rest of New England for blizzards and sub-zero temps.

There are a few up here in Victoria,B.C. A guy just down the road got a semi full from California and is selling them. $250.00 for one six foot palm. I know of one place that has two bannanna plants growing outside.I was suprised to see they were about twenty feet tall.However they were growing in a sheltered south facing alcove.

I lived 30 miles north of Sacramento, Ca in the Foot hills and a neighbor had two large Mexican palms growing at the end of the driveway. Never saw anymore around there and always wondered how he got his to grow.

Some developers are trying them in St. George UT, which is around 3500 ft. elevation. Last winter they had a long cold spell, as did most all of the west, and I am seeing several of them with dead frons now. Still, some are recovering this summer. I had to laugh when I saw them being hauled in from the south and planted over the past few years. In my mind I just thought, wait till winter.

There is a guy in northern UT (Ogden I think) who has one in his front yard. He has christmas lights wrapped around it 365 days a year and the lights are always on. I guess the warm lights keeps the tree from freezing.

I have several here on my Property just south of Wickenburg Az. but can't recall seeing any north of Wickenburg. Wickenburg is around 2200 ft. Elevation and can get a hard freeze so that would take care of any Palms .

John, I know an outlaw who lived in Wickenburg for a few years. He is a good singer and guitar player. He claimed to have worked on the Sanders ranch. I don't even know if there is such a ranch or not, but he says so. I do know that he was ask to leave in no certain terms.

Don't know of a Sanders Ranch but that does not mean it never existed. Maybe it is raising Houses now instead of Cattle. We have vast stretches of Pristine Desert being bulldozed and laid bare for huge Housing Projects. One such is Wickenburg Ranch,3500 Houses, Shopping Complex, Golf Courses. the first item being built is an 18 Hole golf Course which uses huges amounts of water and to me it is out of my sight as the Aqufier is around 1500 Ft. below Ground and what replenishes it? People with Money are buying here and complain because the Desert Crittersa come to town to get a drink or food,DUH, what part of Desert Destruction don't they understand.

I suspect he was making up some of his tales. He did say that houses were ruining the desert though. The same thing is happening all over. I wonder about all the folks that build big high dollar houses in the middle of a forest and then expect fire departments to save their houses when the woods catch fire. You always hear of fire destroying thousands of acres when in fact it is good for the forest. Years ago most the forest around here would burn off every year. They didn't even try to put them out. The woods are so thick with under growth now that you can barely walk through them. I suspect there will be a big fire sooner or later as all the logs and old pine trees that died a few years back will now add fuel for the fire.

Most palms grow in zone 9 or 10 but if you do your homework; Are willing to take good care of it so it will have a better chance of fighting off cold; and are willing to compromize and take a variety that handles cold beeter; you can grow some palms as far north as zone 7. You may be taking a chance that far north though because a colder than normal winter will wipe them out anyway.

There are many different trees called "palms". If you're talking about the US Atlantic coast, you're probably thinking of the cabbage palmetto. The palmetto does well in coastal South Carolina, but its range ends around Wilmington, NC. The gulf stream swings out away from the coast when it hits Cape Fear, with the result that the climate of the coast north of Wilmington is much colder than it is south of Wilmington.

If you visit the North Carolina coast, you'll see a lot of palmettos between Cape Fear and Cape Lookout. These are all transplants, generally planted by developers trying to sell coastal properties. These trees invariably die when a cold winter comes along.

The palms seen in Cornwall are not palm trees but are the New Zealand cabbage Tree. (Cordyline Australis) Grows up to 12m (40ft) high. Not a palm at all, but often referred to in the UK as Torquay Palms!

Now isn't that ironic? We could make this thread "tractor subject compliant" by discussing Jake's tractor, but that would just get us kicked off. On the palm subject, they're all over western Washington- some cold-hardy variety. Some friends have 2 by their pool, and I know its been at or near single digits in temp. since they put them in. Spendy, though- they paid $100 per foot for 4 footers.

They grow most of the way up the Florida peninsula. Fresno is the northern limit for California, and once you get very far north of Phoenix they don"t do well in Arizona.

We have a place here in north alabama called cold palms that sell them for our climate. It depends on the variety. Do a search for cold palms.

we are about 120 miles from the MS gulf coast. There are some varieties that do well here, some will grow even further north, it depends on the variety.

There are some varieties that grow as far north as Myrtle beach SC. NOt sure what they are. The SC flag has a palmetto tree on it.

SC has Palmetto trees on the state house grounds in Columbia, SC. Reason for Palmetto tree on state flag comes from incident in Revolutionary War. British were attacking Charleston, the harbor was defended by a small fort on Sullivan's Island. British ships sailed up to fort, started shelling it, fort was built partly of Palmetto logs which soaked up the cannonballs. Fort's cannon shot up the British ships, British withdrew. Later in the war the British came back and captured the city using more intelligent tactics Palmetto trees do not have coconuts, but I guess they are menbers of the palm family.
