Small Two-Row No-Till Planter

I want to purchase or build a small two row no-till planter. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg and don't think it will be necessary. Any suggestions on where to find and affordable planter or ideas on building one are appreciated.

If your ground is the least bit hard, you will have problems getting good penetration w/ a 2 row unless you add a lot of weight. Even 4 rows require considerable additional weight if the ground is hard and dry.

look for an old 4 row John Deere 7000. They go pretty cheap sometimes. Units mount on the main frame individually. Take 2 outside ones off and cut ends off main frame if you want. No till coulters will mount right on planting units. If you are lucky you may find one already equiped with no till coulters. If you are going to notill you may want to want to leave outer ends of main frame on and hang wheel weights on to give you added down presure that is some times needed with no till in hard dry soil.

Hunting clubs have gotten in style around here and they want these for food plots. Some guys around here are taking old AC 6 and 8 row no-till planters that sell for $200 and cuting them into 2 row planters and making 3pt hitches for them and selling them for $200 or more each. If you could find you a six row, make three out of it, get your money back and keep one to use. Around here if you paint one of them green it will sell at auction for at least a hundred more.

Me thinks most people didn`t learn about notill until long after 2 row planters grew into 8 row planters. Most I`ve see were cut down from bigger ones.

I've got a 3 point A-C planter that I was thinking about converting.It's mounted on a toolbar and I was going to put no-till coulters on the toolbar ahead of the row openers.Think the downpressure of the hydraulics would force it in the ground enough.One thing that might be a trouble spot is the drive chains.Each unit drives off it's own press wheel.Afraid it will jam up with corn stubble if I try to do corn after corn.Probably be alright in sod though.

AC made a 2 row 3ph no till planter. probably could get parts from AGCO to convert regular planter, for a price.
