Before I got married in October, my wife was terrible to her car. Hardly ever changed the oil, just abusive. Well that car died. We went out and got another car on the condition that maintennance would be done to the car. Tell me when you are 200 miles from the amount on the sticker and I'll take it in and get the oil changed.
Apparently this is too much to ask. Am I alone on this subject or are some of ya'll in the same boat?

Well Boys this month on the 22nd I will have been married 55 yrs. and I found a KEEPER. shes a really good mechanic and was given her own set of tools by the ZEROX co. I will always listen to her advice when it comes to that mysterious noise and where it comes from.I dont disparage her not wanting to cook( cause she can and does). I have saved a large fortune and am proud her.

Used to do oil changes free for about 6 ladies. They would all come in with dry dipsticks. I started yelling about adding oil. Now none of them come back. Am I happy or sad????

My wife is a great cook, wonderful mother and grandmother, and doesn't know an oil change from a muffler bearing. She thinks the "E" on the gas gauge means "Enough!" I keep track of when the oil needs to be changed, check the pressure in the tires, and make sure the lights all work. I make a habit of taking her car for a drive every couple of weeks to see which tire is out of balance from whatever was hit recently.

My advice is to manage the oil changes on your own and enjoy her for the fine qualities that attracted you to her in the first place.

25 years married. Farm 1400A in Iowa with several buildings of hogs and a small feedlot full of cattle.
My wife would drive on the rims if I didn't check her tires, and would run the same oil until the car wouldn't move. I'm afraid the car is totally your dep't.

I don't mind--I have never been to the grocery store or cooked a meal, and the only laundry I do is the really bad manure clothes.

We have learned to just grin and bear it w each other, and this allows us to remain happy.

She says why check the mileage on the oil--even if she did she knows I would go hungry (or to town) before I would cook.

She has told me if I worked a 40-hour job, she would expect more of me with the household stuff, but as long as I am busy (and profitable), she will handle the house alone.

YOU ARE STUCK WITH THE CAR STUFF

You haven't been married a year yet so you're on the steep side of the learning curve. The short answer as to wheather it is too much to ask is yes. So quit expecting her to watch something on the dash like the odometer (your lucky if she watches the speedometer) and figure out a way to deal with it without involving her. That's why she married you! Your love life will thank you for it.

We have a basic rule at our house...I Fix...She Cleans...when it comes to oil changes she will ask me nicely 2-3 times to get hers changed then casually mention that theres no oil on the stick which usually gets me off my can to get it done..

Marriage is not a 50 / 50 kind of a proposition – it is an 80% thing - you do your 80% and she does her 80% and you might meet in the middle!

My wife LIKES to do things like changing the fluids on the tractor, greasing, bush hogging, as well as turning wrenches when it needs something done. She is lacking in upper body strength so sometimes I need to break something free for her if it was tightened too much. There are so many jobs that go much better when you have three or four hands working on them..

She dislikes cooking but does not mind doing the prep work and clean-up, so I take care of applying the heat.

If your wife doesn’t want to / can’t remember / does not understand the importance of / those kinds of things then it is YOUR job.

You can force someone to change but only for a little while.

I worked out a system years ago - I check the milage on everything at the end of the month and record it in a spreadsheet that also has the maintenace log. So it's pretty easy to tell when it's time to change the oil or rotate the tires. I have a pop-up reminder in Outlook that comes up on the last weekday of the month to remind me to check the milage.

I do all the oil changes around here myself. I write down the mileage on a calendar in the garage for each vehicle. I just go and look at the odometers once in a while. The hard part is keeping her off the road long enough to do an oil change. The good part is all of the oil changes on her car are "hot". Engine never gets cold.

You should see the collection of 1 & 2 gallon gas cans around here. Each purchased after the wife had to walk to a service station. I complained and she realized she can call CAA when she remembers to charge her cell phone. She's improving. This week she ran the van out of fuel in our driveway. It was a short walk for her to pilfer my truck and drive on the lawn around the cripple.

Never thought of myself in that context, I'm so used to jumping out of her way. The out of fuel van ( cripple ) was blocking the laneway so she took my truck for a tour across the lawn around the van.

If I want the maintenance performed in a timely matter, then it is my job to keep an eye on the odometer and fluid levels. Of course, we had our system worked out before we were married - she does the laundry and I do just about everything else - most of the cooking, cleaning, vehicle maintenance, pay bills, etc. I hate laundry and she takes care of that, everything else I don't mind.

One thing I've done that helps me keep track of miles on the vehicles is to have a spreadsheet set-up to keep track of miles per gallon of gas. On each gas receipt she writes down the miles on the odometer, trip miles (tank), and of course the gallons, price per gallon, and total cost is printed on the receipt. Helps me keep track of the overall condition of the vehicle - if mpg suddenly drops by 3-5 I know a tire is getting low, or needs an air filter, or whatever - time to look things over!

Email me if you want a copy of my spreadsheet that is all set up to calculate mpg for three different vehicles with total fuel cost for the year, total miles, etc.

Women's intuition does NOT apply to vehicles. YOU can detect a new noise, if a tire is 2 lbs. low, or many other things driving it the first mile, but the Mrs. cannot. To her, the car is just another purse - only bigger. The vehicle stuff is your job alone. That's why she married you, in case you didn't know.

Kinda like us men and the toilet seat, it's a no brain-er to put it down but we leave it up. You take care of the maintenance and upkeep of the vehicles. It should be your top priority to make sure her car is always safe and reliable. You married her because you love her as she was then(I hope) don't go trying to change into what you want now. If you treat her like a queen she will look past the toilet seat you left up.

You should deal with a wife and 4 step-daughters. When the girls lived at home I would mantain their cars. I run Mobil 1 synthenic in their cars. That gives me a better control on the changes. The wife does a lot for me...It does not take long to pull the stick and check the oil..look for other fluid levels. Look underneath for leaks. Listen when they drive in..for brakes.Kids don't know what to look for...teach them. 2 are married now and one knows more about maintence than her husband.

I had the same issues for about 30 yrs. Then in 2005 my wife of all things with gas prices at $3.00 per gallon wants a full size van!! I said you work, make the payments and insurance ok.
2 yrs later not one oil change or general maintenance check has been missed and guess what - I haven`t done any of them. I guess every month when she takes her hard earned cash and makes that $600.00 payment it reminds her to take care of it!!!!!

My wife is pretty good about reminding me to get her oil changed. Her sister is terrible. Runs a car until it starts making "clicking" sounds and the red light comes on. I think the problem is she usually leases a car, doesn't own it, and doesn't want to put any money into it.

Don't you know women think cars are put the key in anf go there is never any work that is need to be done to them or at least thats how most women think or at least 99% of the ones I have known. I did a tranny filter change and had to replace the tranny oil pan on my wife can not long ago and told her she needed to check the fluid every day for at least a week. Well it didn't get done unless I went out and did it my self. So yep I know what your talking about

Yes, take it in. It's just way easier to let them collect the waste oil. I have to hunt for a place to take the oil to, and meanwhile, contain it so it does not spill or be gotten into.

It's not just women with their cars. My big gripe is farmers with leased machinery--and especially combines that seem to suffer the most. How many lessors take time to even grease the bearings? GRRRR!!!!!

By the way, if I come visit you, Lance, can you have a rather good assortment of that special cold stuff made in Brenham ready for me?

some women should not be allowed to drive let alone own a car. my former m-i-l was a classic example. the things she did to a car were almost criminal. she ran it out of oil, low on water, tires were always low on air. she never had the same mechinanic work on it twice so if something wasn't fixed right she couldn't remember who do what. no you're not alone if that's any help. her daughter on the other hand if she thought something might be wrong she was telling me about it.

I have wondered about the claims that these oils will run so long, like on Amsoil's website it says 15,000 miles. The oil that is in the car now will get dirty just as quick as the Amsoil will. The filter is really the important part. It doesn't matter if the oil "will last 15,000 miles" if it is dirty oil.
What do you think?

Its not the dirt that kills the oil. Oil filters will filter it out so the dirt particles are small enough without damaging the engine. It is the molecules that shatter and break down in regular oil. They are like little ball bearings that keep the metal to metal contact from happening. When they break down the engine starts wearing. The synthetic oil does not break down at the same rate. It lasts much longer. That is why they send it in to be analyzed. To see if it is still stable.

Oil turns black due to carbon. Carbon is what needs to be filtered out of the engine oil. Oil doesn't wear out. The additive package in the oil does.
The synthetic oils molecules are changed so that they are more round, without as many rough edges. This does not prevent carbon, what wears out the engine, or suspended sandpaper.
Point is, the engine oil, no matter the manufacturer will still get dirty and need to be changed based on the fact that the filtration process for the oil will not filter out all the wear particles (carbon) from the engine. If I ran a bypass filtering system with media that is finer than what is in the standard filter, and raised the amount of oil in the system from 4.5 to 7 qts, I could see this working.
Thing is, at 6,000 miles the current filter could be full, and start bypassing, not filtering oil and pumping the carbon oil through the engine.

Actually I would suggest you do a little more research about oil molecules. But no matter, just two different opinions. In 200,000 miles of driving, changing your oil every 3000 miles you will change your oil about 67 times, or about 100 gallons of oil if you have a 6 quart pan. If I stick to the 25,000 mile changes that is about 8 oil changes or 12 gallons of oil to do basically the same thing. People are wasteful these days because they have more expendable income so they can do whatever they believe is right. If you think it takes 100 gallons of engine oil to go 200,000 miles spend away. Engine oil usage could be cut down 80% if people would just listen and learn a bit about it. Oil companies love people like you.

Oil turns black due to carbon right? Carbon in the oil is what causes wear to the engine parts, not supplying a sufficient and smooth enough film to seperate the moving parts. If you have a good enough filtration system, you can warrant extending the oil change. My point is that the little no count filters don't sufficiently filter the oil and you are back to square one. Even if their oil will last 50,000 miles, it's a mute point if the oil is dirty and not filtered clean. Run the oil that is like liquid sand paper.
