I have a question maybe someone can help me with, on my 99 Safari van. My air conditioner will shut off when going up a grade at a fairly fast speed. When I get to the top, and back off on the gas, the air comes back on. Is there any reason this happens. Thanks for any info. Stan

I have a GMC Safari Van. It does NOT disengage the A/C when you accelerate hard. I've owned it from new, and it never had that feature. Mine is a '96 so unless GM made a change between '96 and '99, all the posts about a it being designed that way are wrong.

I think Revredneck is probably right.

My 99 Safari AWD drops the AC at near full throttle.

Listen to Bob. The engineers figure if you are in a foot to the floor situation. The extra "free" HP gained by disengaging the AC clutch is best used assisting your ability. To pass and pull back in before an oncoming vehicle rams your's. That has been a VCM program since 1984 in many GM vehicles.

I"ve had a couple Chevy Astro"s (same van) and worked in Chevy dealer service dept. for many years. Your problem is most likely a vaccuum leak, just like Kansas Cockshutt said. You should begin by looking at the vacuum source hose on the intake manifold. I"ll bet you find it soft and leaking at the fitting. To get to that, you need to remove the engine cover. The hose plugs into the rear of the intake manifold. Also trace that hose to the big, black vacuum reservoir and make sure the hoses on the check valve are okay, too. 99% chance this will fix your problem.
Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

What do you mean by "shut off"- the compressor kicks off or it quits blowing cold air? If it quits blowing it could be a vacuum controlled door in the vent system that looses vacuum because of the load placed on the engine climbing the hill and resumes after the grade is pulled. Had this happen on an older pickup. Some use vacuum to control the doors in the system, others are electrical, not sure what you have.

The powertrain control 'puter is probably programed to shut it

the AC compressor off to "make power"/"save gas" under those driving conditions.
