I thought that you guys who mow your property should here about this one.

A 15 year old kid was mowing some grass and his mower broke down. It started a grass fire, burned up about 50 acre and two mobil homes.

That's not what's so bad though because now they want to charge the kid with a CRIME.

Will be interesting to see what he is charged with.

I don't see where the boy commited a 'crime'

Makes you wonder what goes thru people's heads.

it's an unfortunate accident for sure.

it's also the prime reason why i keep a fire extinguisher on all my tractors..

Officials: Wildland fire sparked by lawnmower

HOOD RIVER, Ore. - A wildland fire in Hood River Saturday evening damaged a vacant mobile home and led to the evacuation of 100 homes but did not lead to any injuries, fire officials said.

The blaze, which started around 4 p.m., grew to more than 45 acres. Firefighters were able to keep the flames from any homes where people live, Hood River city fire officials said. Some outbuildings were also damaged in addition to the double-wide mobile home.

By 8 p.m. Saturday, crews had the fire 95 percent contained and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
One firefighter was taken to a hospital for heat exhaustion but was later treated and released.

As of Sunday, crews were still at the scene mopping up and extinguishing hotspots.

Fire Marshall Jim Trammel of the West Side Fire Department determined that a riding lawnmower that malfunctioned sparked the blaze. Fire officials said a 15-year-old boy was mowing his yard when the mower broke down and sparked. Investigators have interviewed the boy. A report will eventually be forwarded to prosecutors, who will decide whether any charges are warranted.

Authorities said the fire was centered in an area bordered by Cascade Avenue to the north, May Drive to the south, Rand Road to the east and Frankton Road to the west. A map of the site of the blaze is here.

The fire did not lead to any lane closures on nearby Interstate 84. However, officials did close the eastbound ramp of exit 62 into Hood River for several hours.

He must've been mowing some super dried up grass, because I can't see freshly mown grass catching fire.

They might be thinking about charges but depending on what actually happened they might not be able to press charges. The owners may be the ones pressing for charges because they're mad but that doesn't mean charges will stick. If they didn't have insurance, they should have. Dave

Just wait for the legal litigation.

As we took our family vacation recently, we stayed a weekend at a large state park in Kentucky that had a large clean public pool with 2 diving boards. Yes, 2 diving boards in the deep end! Holy cow! Time for some good, old fashioned fun! My sons and I probably did a couple thousand combined jumps and dives off them throughout the weekend and had the kind of swimming pool fun that I haven't had since I was a kid. Now that we're back in Georgia, there aren't diving boards anywhere except for a few snooty indoor pools that host swim and diving clubs. My point is that when I was a kid, almost every pool had a diving board. Now everyone's afraid to have them, at least in GA.

The ironic thing about diving boards is that there are relatively few injuries/fatalities involving diving boards. Diving accidents almost always involve diving into shallow water; diving boards are always at the deep end of the pool. Because of a couple of highly publicized product liability lawsuits, insurance companies are refusing to insure owners of pools with diving boards.

Dave, they are quickly disappearing here as well. It was on the news just a few nights back. They also said it was all about liability. You may not find those boards if you return to Ky.

It was an accident.

If you dont want to play that way, sue the makers of the mower. If any crops were lost, they ought to replace them. As for the buildings, if they had no insurence, well, it sucks to be them.

What is it with people? Very simple.

Lawyers and easy litigation. Many are looking for easy money and the lawyers, being what they are.....are expecting to get their easy 25-33%. There are simply too many bottom feeders being turned out upon society.

The insurance companies are no better. They love to collect premiums, but will fight to the last breath to avoid paying a claim. Again...who does their bidding? A team of lawyers.

Lawyers are having a field day.....they profit from both sides of the fence. Who suffers? The general populace...that's you and me.

Kill all the damned lawyers and things will get better in a hurry...hehehe!

Need more details- was he mowing parents lawn or getting paid to mow someone elses? What was breakdown- engine catch fire or something that should have been called in to fire dept, or just broken blades that he tried to loosen with a propane torch to replace? Criminal charge? - something on the line of negligent vandalism/damage to property? Unlicensed/uninsured commercial business? Failure to report fire that he started in timely manner? Source? RN

Walt, that is a sad reflection of our society today. I suppose his parents will be sued and held liable for any and all damage that was done as well as the expense of putting out the fire. I don't know what will come of this world as it seems to be going downhill to me. I saw were some kids were prosecuted for having a food fight in a school cafeteria. These people seem to forget about being a kid themselves. Everyone wonders why I don't leave the place. I did make it up to see my only living grandmother the other day. She will be 87 thursday. She was canning green beans when I got there.

Walt, most folks I know that old remember hard times and hate to be caught without food stored up. I am that way myself and canning everything I can get in a jar. If the electric goes off it will keep. I visited with gramps's yougest sister this evening and she showed me pictures I had never seen before. They were taken in 1967. My great grandpa, gramps, dad lots of uncles,aunts and even me were killing hogs on Thanksgiving day. An old black man that helped us was even in them. I had forgotten all about him. We called him peg leg Smith. He broke a leg and it became infected and he lost it. He couldn't afford a store bought leg so he made one from a chunk of oak. I didn't know anyone had pics of us killing all those hogs. Was a real treat for me to see them. She is going to get me some copies of them.

George, did you see where Murphy was convicted of killing his friend a couple of weeks ago and sentenced? With time served (from last fall) he will be out on parole in less than a year and a half. They lived just down the road from me, He went into the house grabbed a hand gun loaded it and went outside and started firing shots until he killed Luke. (was only charged with second degree manslaughter). It is a said state that we live in.

Greg, I did see that. It is a shame when killers,rapest and child molestors get off easier than dope users. My opinion is if a man is dumb enough to stick needles in his arm to get high that is his business. It isn't any worse than alcohol. They get 20 years and more sometimes while these real bad guys get to walk easy.
