I stagger the planting of sweetcorn in my garden so it is not all ready to eat at once. As I pick the ears I cut the empty stalk and lay it on the ground mulch and rot into humus. I believe this conserves the moisture and nitrogen for the remaining corn. Am I right in thinking this way?

Aint IA GARY but thats the way to go as the old stalk will start decaying and be ready for dry matter when you fall plow it under.

Very right in your thinking.

If you leave that stalk standing it is still using moisture trying to stay green.

If you remove the stalk from the field you will remove nutrients for next years crop also.

The only stalks I remove are what is removed by the cows grazing on them. But they return the nutrients daily.(:~})

John as dry as it is in all of Mich what your doing is certainly not wrong. Anything to conserve a bit of moisture. I was just up across the bridge and it was dry and brown all the way to the SOO and into Canada.

We live five miles south of Petoskey. The Emmet - Charlevoix County fair is on this week. I get to cook pancakes at our church food booth.
