I got alot of good advice here on hauling equipment and now I have a few more questions.
I have a Mack Midliner and pull a Tex Bragg tandem dual trailer. I feel good having this size truck as it has some size to it.
I can't break any speed records and the Mack works hard pulling 12-15Klbs but I get passed by this 350/3500 pickups pulling a backhoe like it's nothing.
How do they do that?
I really would like a different truck of this size with true air brakes, Anyone have a any suggestions?
Brian

Like was said, you need horsepower. More gears also helps. If you're talking about the cab over single axle Macks, they are Renaults and put out around 210 or 215 HP. How many gears does the tranny have? I used to have a Hino and pulled my Cat with it. It was slow but on flat roads could get up to highway speed after a while. If I encountered a hill, sometimes I had to downshift into 2nd gear. I only had 6 gears and 165 HP but could still move the Cat without having to hire someone. I was happy. I could have used a lot more power and gears but my truck got about 16 MPG if all I was pulling was my bobcat on a smaller trailer. If I had to move the Cat all the time I would have got a bigger truck. It all depends on how much you use the truck to haul big loads. Dave

Well don't know how your HAIR LIP DUCK is set up , buti can tell ya this when i was running around the midwest buying and selling tractors i ran a 88 Ford F3504x4 with a 9 foot flatbed with a 460 Gasser 5 speed pullen a 28 foot tandem dual gooseneck , i never had a problem running with the large cars and passen them if i wanted to lean on it . And believe me that i use to load the wagon . if there was not two tractors setting on the deck then it was loaded with plows disks and what ever elses in i could stack on the deck . If i was buying emplements then there would be atleast two 4- bottom semi mount plows and a couple disks on top of that maybe a couple field culivators on top of that set of duals on the neck weights setting on the ft. of the truck bed evy inch of flat space full and it would run down the road with no problems . The only time that i felt that i had tomuch on was a 1570 Case with 30.5l32 tires on the back that were loaded along with not one set but two sets of huge wheel weights Not sure what that one tractor weighed but i knew it was more the a 1066 loaded and a 806 loaded weighed . I hauled both of them at once from Ill. to eastern Ohio together . The only time that it was had pullen was in the hills and the 460 had to work in third but never got below 35mph on the hills on US 30 east of I 71.Your truck may only have a 165--190Hp. engine and your gearing my not be suited for road work . Just like a big truck that is set up for pulling a freight box is not set up for doing heavy haulen or Dump trailer work . It may be able to run down the road over a 100 MPH but put it in the hills with a big load and see how it acts or try and get a big load moving off a hill . With the newer pick ups and one tons of today off the show room floor they are maken more pony power and more Ft.Lbs of torque then your truck is plus they are geared better for the most part.

Alot of people in my area do add-ons & upgrades for their diesel pickups. I've seen a guy in our area with 3500 Crewcab Duramax do a burnout & actually outrun a stock GT Mustang in the quarter mile. It's crazy but true... it will cost you though for those bragging rights.

I wonder how legal a F350 is pulling a trailer with a 15,000 lb backhoe on it is. Since the truck is rated at 13,000 max trailer weight. Thats trailer and load.
Pulling it is one thing; STOPPING it is another.

My 99 Ford F550 Powerstroke will handle 15,000lbs on a tandem dual trailer with ease.If I bought another truck it would probably be an International with a DT466 as Ford isn't offering the 7.3 anymore

There's a very easy answer to that question... The MidLiner has one of those old Renualt engines that makes something like 150-200 hp. The newer 2500/3500 trucks have 300-350 HP coming from those little engines. They're wound for sound... and a lot lighter than the MidLiner, so they blow past you. A friend of mine has moved my D4H Cat on his tri-axle gooseneck behind his 03 Dodge and he has no problem maintaining highway speeds with it. That dozer is 12 tonne...
New trucks have power.

What engine do you have? You may actually have less horsepower than the I tons. Like someone else said, gearing makes a differance also.
It does not mater who made the chassis, it all depends on the drive train.

He's talking about the F-350 and Ram 3500 one ton pickups, not 350 engines. How is he supposed to tell what kind of engine they have barreling down the highway?

Dump the Mack. Get a Pete if your looking at trading more adapted to the owner working on than most.Meaning room to get to things.Parts are easy to get. And most engines are available in them. They are not the high priced truck everybody thinks. For what your doing the 330 should work just fine plenty of power options and transmission choices too. I run over the road for a living this is my choice and I've owned pete's mack and volvo. I like the caterpillar engine the old BS about more to repair is a myth any more look at the parts in magazines and Cat ,Cummins, and Detroit pennies apart.
