not running

I have a farmall 460 that will not start. It was running perfectly yesterday. I tried to start it today and it wouldn't hit a lick. After cranking a while I heard a bang and saw a giant fireball come out of the carb. What is wrong with it? I know it is in time correctly because I haven't touched anything. Could the coil be bad? Condensor? What is it?

Agree with the others, it's almost certainly an ignition problem of some sort.

I had som cheap points (in a car) once that looked good but had a small crack making them weak. So when I took a hasty look it seemed fine and I searched for other farfetched problems. So if it's an ignition problem look at it twice, if it runs on starting gas as someone said it's a fuel problem.

I just don't like to start changing parts, but if you don't have a way to check the condenser I would go and buy one and replace it.They do go bad. Stan

I suspect if it's been raining where you are,you might have a cracked distributor cap. It has drawn moisture and is causing the spark to jump.

I'm with Allan on this one. Look at that distributor. The drive gear may even be turning on the shaft. Try turning the rotar and shaft by hand and see if it turns. It shouldn't.

Had a neighbor with a Farmall H that acted that way and turned out to be the rotor had broken in two. Quick easy fix once he figured it out.

If it backfired or "belched" fire, you can forget all about the fuel because the problem is in the ignition.

When was the last time you looked at those points?

As Allan has said and also. Just because the points look good doesn't mean they are good. I've seen a good many sets of points get just a little dirt etc. on them and then they don't work at all or do so on and off and if they work on and off that will cause a back fire like that because the manifold fills with gas and when it does fire then it gets a big bang

Is the rotor turning? Is there moisture in the cap? Is the coil wire okay?

Something is throwing your timing out the window.

pull the coil wire, hold it near the engine block and crank it over with the ignition on, should have a 1/4 inch blue spark. if not ignition problem. if you got spark, try spraying some starting fluid or carb cleaner in the carb and see if it starts. if it fires up and dies, you have a fuel problem.

Check nd mkae sure you did loose spark also double check the carb it may have a stuck float. Tap the side of the carb and see if that helps

Sounds like it might be flooded. Most times a guy can get it to start after letting it sit for a while or opening the throttle all the way & then crank it. May help to pull the plugs and dry them off too.
