I lost the key to my tractor and bypassed the key switch. The tractor sat for about two hours without running. The coil was hot as hell. Needless to say it wouldnt start and I had to tow it outta the field. Now I have no spark to the plugs. Do you think I fried the coil or is this just a freak thing. Does it need a switch (key or toggle) so the power isn"t running to the coil all the time.???? It has been changed over to 12 volt"s Another novice bite the dust..... ...

As old said, yes, you need a switch. Despite what the other user said about the coil being ok.. .. there is a good chance it is not. The square coils have been coming out with real bad quality issues lately.

I'd also look a tthe points.. if they use a plastic or hard rubber rubbing block.. figure on it being melted.. A phenolic one probably survived. make sure the contacts aren't welded together either.

I doubt very much that you fried the coil as it will run full time all the time if wired to 6 volt's check to see if they put in a Balance resister when they converted it to 12 volt. To check the the coil hold the coil wire near a ground then break the points open with a screw driver you should get a spark if none the the coil is bad.
Be sure its got voltage going in and out of of the two small screws on the top of the coil.

Well if you wire any coil not matter if its one like on the 2N or one in a car if you leave the switch turned on for say 30-90 minutes you will destroy the coil if the points happen to be closed. Yes you need a switch of some sort or yes you will kill the coil and you will also drain the battery also. So yes you fried your coil and probably the points also
