OT had a bad spell in the grocery today.

I have MS it doesn't bother me to much except when walking on hard surfaces. Today I took Ma to the grocery store (she can't drive since she pasted out an fell in the living room) I was sitting in the cart and waiting for the guy to add up my bill when I went into one of my famous spells can;t talk jerk all over muscle tighten up and hurt like "H"ain't no fun I can tell you. all the time all I can think of is how do I get back to the farm like this. Well Ma drove us home kind of slow but pretty safe even though her eyes don't focus to well. I'm trying to get my daught to move out from NE but my wife won't have it, maybe after today she will get the idea we can't live alone much longer.
Boy this is hard for me to wrte as I don't like to complain about my health to other's but maybe it will help if I get off my chest.
Thank for all you guys and your help her.

Walt, After helping my late wife for 26+ years with her battle with MS. We went thru many different stages, and used several different ways to get her help while I was at work as a truck driver. I bet you understand the feeling of hopelesness when you get a call from Hillsboro when I was in Seattle, saying "I'm on the floor and can't get up --- AND I'VE GOT TO GO TO THE BATHROOM!!!" E-mail Me if you want to talk. I may have a few ideas that may help.

Walt- Thoughts and prayers with you both. I live in a real rural area. Several of the older folks get together 2-3 times a week to make runs to "the big city" for appointments/shopping/etc. Might be worth a try if you have neighbors with issues too. Seems to have started in our local church. Besides, with gas what it is today anythings a help. They all have lunch together and seem to really enjoy the day. They're all retired farmers, mill workers, etc.

I want to thank all who responded to my post I'm doing a bit better today the hot tub helps a lot in getting back up an going.

Its nice to hear that some of enjoy my posts especially after getting kicked off another tractor list because I told someone that he did have to ground the case on his coil. Wow you would think I had broken the Holy grail or something.

Any way my Thanks go out to this group an I hope I can get back up and use my tractors I have full yard right now just enticing me to come out an play.

Mr. Davies, you and your wife are in our prayers here. I commend you for your activity with the condition you have. I know you want to keep doing the things you like and that's what helps keep you going.

I sure didn't take your post to be complaining. You may get some good ideas on how to handle things from the many good folks here. Remember we all have problems. Many never post them. But we are human and all have problems of one sort or another. It's good to talk about them at times too.

Hope you get everything worked out to make it easier and safer.

Been reading your post here for some time now. Always enjoy your writings.

Hi Walt - Didn't know you had M.S. My late wife delt with M.S. for over 30 yrs. so I know what you're going through. Several others on this site are also dealing with M.S. as well. Are you on any medication for your spasms (Bacloefen?)I've been very heavily involved with the M.S. Society here in Ontario and would really recommend that you get in contact with your American M.S. Society if you haven't already done so. We initially thought we could handle M.S. on our own,but after being approached by one of Sharon's friends, we joined our local Unit. Believe me, the support and advice one gains from such organizations is wonderfull.

Boy you are correct about one day at time one day you jump out of bed and go about the farm as though nothing is wrong then you have another spell and the whole world turns on you for a few days.. My worst spell was my first one it lasted for several months but as you know this disease can hide for months or years in between spells. Mine are more frequent now so i guess I'm getting to that point where my aunt was when it just leaves you fully disabled. Walt

Walt - When dealing with those who are newly diagnosed with M.S.(or any other serious condition)I always like to emphasize that there hasn't been a better time ever to have such conditions as there is so much more support and medical services available now than just a few years ago. My maternal aunt was diagnosed with M.S. in the 'fifties when there was absolutly no support available and little known medically about M.S. My wife was diagnosed in 1975 and you can't begin to imagine the advances in health care and support since then. Please find a local chapter of the American M.S. Society to help out. Might be easy to "Google" it.
Walt, you're a long way from total disability!! You'll be amazed at how you'll be able to adapt as time progresses. THINK POSITIVE!!!!! !

Walt,
You are a brave man to acknowledge the dilema you are in. It's good to know you and your wife made it home safely, but think of the danger you and your wife were in not to mention the other folks around you on that ride home. I would say it's time to sit down with your wife and have a heart to heart talk about your future and inability to continue without assistance. Assistance can come in many ways, friends from church stopping by occasionally or good neighbors helping out with difficult tasks or family members assisting part of full time. My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 8 years ago and I watched and listened from a distance of 500 miles, ocasionally making the trip down for a week or even just a few days (whatever time was available at the time). Finally 4 years ago after trying to convince my folks to move up with us I gave up. Instead I took the big step, sold the house and moved to be closer. A lot closer. Being only 4 miles away instead of 500 miles away proved to be one the best things I have ever done. Although I lost my Mom over a year ago, being able to spend time with her on a regular basis is something I would never have given up. Dad is still living, and doing it independently but I'm still here just 4 miles away and making sure I'm available for him as needed. He's in his mid 80's and not in the best of health himself but he knows I prefer to allow him his freedom, but that we are here if needed.
Walt you have taken that first step by posting your message, some would consider it as a plea for help. Start helping your wife understand that the two of you are going to need help, and need it soon. Don't wait, procrastination does not solve anything.
By the way, my Grandmother (on my Dad's side) also had MS. Sadly I never knew her but I sure wish I had. Grandad always spoke so highly of her.

thank you for the kind words I will cetainly take your advise but I up against an old lady (82) who has a mind of her own and won't allow her daughter to come out an help us. she still thinks she can do the same things that she did at 20. Actually we are both blessed or on not so blessed with the feeling that we are still quite young even when the Ol' body doesn't want to agree with the mind.

Walt,

I'm terribly sorry to hear of your health problems. If I understood your post correctly, your daughter lives in Nebraska and you live somewhere else. If she can't move to where you are, would it be possible for you and your wife to relocate somewhere near her?

Both my mother and my mother-in-law lived with us for many years when they were no longer able to care for themselves alone. It worked out very well, and among other things, it enabled our children to show their care and concern for others during that time.

Tom i also had a heart attack a few years back and because of that I'm limited to the lower elevations and as you know NE is over 5000 ft. that is my limit .
Sometime I think I'm caught between a rock an hard spot.

Worst of all When I'm not walking good I can't play with my tractors and there is another pull coming up in my home town this month BUMMER.
