Sorry guy's, but I have to admit this, I'm an addict. This time of year I am spending all my available money on my habit and I get to the point I can't stop! Is there no cure for my problem??!

God, I hope not!

I can't help myself, I have tons of seed catalogs and with the "help" of the internet I can order seeds from all over the WORLD! I am going to be a busy lil planter this season, as hubby has agreed to let me go and rent (finally!!) a 10hp rear- tine tiller so I can finally get my other spot done which is somewhere around 70x120. he,he! I was going to turn it with pigs, but the electric fence netting STILL hasn't come in yet from Kencove so I give up on that one for this year.

I have been ordering seeds left and right, and pulling out my boxes of ones I have been collecting this year from previous crops, and aw man I can't wait to buy an Earthway walk-behind seeder. Vegetables and herbs and flowers, Oh My!

Is anyone else planting anything?

I planted turnips,kale,collards and mustard greens last week and they are just coming up.I only put organic fertilizers on my gardens and truck patches vegetables are better tasting and the plants bear longer than useing the chemical kind.When you get the Earthway planter also get the 2nd set of extra seed plates.

Hey Leroy,

I'm down South, in the Gainesville FL area. (Zone 8-9) We DO get frost on the ground and it will stay for a bit, but then the temp will get around a cool 20-40 degree range. Once the weather gets really cool in that range I LOVE it! Best time for me to get all my chores done without the sweating and I like starting seeds off in a greenhouse type atmosphere.

Immmmm, hot toddies with cinnamon, open bon-fires, (my home-grown broiler chickens will be ready about then too), hay rides and wooly sheep for the kids to chase!

The growing season here in Ohio can end at any time from the 3rd week in Sept to the first of Nov.

Hey Katherine; There is a place on the way to the farm that has burned over quite a bit this year with hogs. They have some small pens built on wheels. Pull the rebar stakes and move the pen every couple days and the ground is plowed and ferilized. Dont say its the best seed bed but definetely worked up.

Hey MN Bob,

That sounds interesting, but how do they keep the pigs from digging under their pens? We have also a problem with bobcats around here, and I would like to be sure that WE people would be getting the benefit of my healthy pigs, NOT the wildlife! Can you tell me more about their set-up?

I would suspect the hogs with the portable pens have plenty of new area to keep them busy so they may not work so hard at getting out. If you have them in a more permenant pen a row of electric fench around the bottom inside stops them from rooting out the fence. I used to have a few for FFA (up to 6 ) and once broke to the electric fench in the pen I could make a bigger fenced in area with just electric and turn them out in it.

Think Farmall Super A or Super C. A must for small or medium scale veggie farming. Lot easier to use than that tiller. Will pull plow, disk, planters, transplanter, mower, wagons, cultivator, seeder and so on.

sweet corn. But my main crop is weeds. This year. MAWHAHAHAHAHA.

Speeking of which, the hardware store sells this preen stuff, I like it, looks like its for me. Anyone know where to get large amounts of it? They sell it in little jugs, I need enough for a small field.

Which version of Preen?

The corn glutten version - just ground corn basically.

Or the Trifluralin version?

Corn is a grass - killing off grass in the corn can be very tricky - pay careful attention to how big the corn is and what spray you are using, or you could have a disaster....

I don"t think Preen is what you want. It stops seeds from emerging, but it might stop the corn too (I"m not sure).

Contact your county agent about pesticide certification. They train you on what to use, when to use it, and most important - how to use it safely.

It will stop the corn. The hardware store lady said wait till the corn is up, then put it down. It stops weeds from growing after that point, and whatever weeds are there grow, go to seeds which wont sprout, and die. I think. Was payin more attention to her then what she was saying :)

The secret to a good garden Lanse is to weed it and pay attention to it every day. This year I had the very best garden I had ever done, but only because I decided to scale it down from what I used to try to plant and took much better care of it. If you get carried away and try to do too much it will end up a disaster, or if you just plain spend too much time on the computer or doing other things, you'll end up with nothing but a weedpatch. doing a garden takes lots of time, but it is mighty rewarding to watch the things grow, or atleast it is to me. By going smaller I got way more out of my garden this year than ever because I was able to keep up with it.

Back when this corn had a chance, I diddnt spend much time here. I cultivated , but the drought shrivled it up and the weeds just took over. It has been considered doomed since mid july. I'm gonna chop it up with a buchhog and collect it with one of my contraptions. Then feed it to my pet sheep.

You need a watering can and corn without any fertilizer won't do much of anything. I fertilized mine with some 10-10-10 commerical fertilizer back when I planted mine in May. I applied the fertilizer immediatly after I covered the seed, then I weeded it about twice, had spectacular sweet corn. Don't let the weeds get ahead of it.

2 acres!!!, no wonder it got away from you. Yes, you could water it if you wanted to. Use a water hose on a portable sprinkler, and keep moving it to water the whole 2 acres. You can buy those sprinklers from any hardware store. If you had the will, there is the way to do things. You might also want to invest in one of those little plastic hose splitter things so you could water 2 areas to once off from one hose.
