We were at Albany MN. on Sat. to Pioneer days and it was fun to see all the MM's. I was amazed at a couple of rather large 4cyl. tractors that had Optima (SP?) batteries about the size of a motorcycle battery, looked like 3 dry cells taped together, and they started that big brute right up. Engine blocks are in two pieces 3 ft. long together, must be 300 ci. Amazing!

Yep those Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries can pack a bunch of energy as compared to a lead acid battery in a smaller package fer sure. Optima uses that circular cell technology compared to Lifeline which uses flat plates. Im still NOT sold on them in our old generator tractors cuz of what Ive read concerning their need for more precise charging and higher charging voltages but maybe on tractors that have alternators thay might fare better??? No problems with nasty acid leaks n they work even upside down I guess.....

Generators work at a higher voltage than alternators. Just thought that you might like to know that.

Got to disagree Walt, most every brand of alternator I have worked with has the regulator set for the standard 14.2 volts. That is kind of the standard for "average" use with a 12V lead acid battery including the AGM type.

AGM Batteries are not as needing precise charging as gell cells were/sre. I used gell cells in my boat for 12 years and they needed to be charged at no more than 13.9 volts. I replaced them with AGM (Flat plates) and they could be charged from 13.8 to 14.4 according to the sellers recommendation. Used them for 6 years before I sold the boat. The military uses AGM batteries and I would not hesitate to use them in my tractor if I needed a new battery.Theyy can sit discharged for a long time and then return to full charge status.

I saw that a few years ago at the Rollag steam thresher show in one fellows Moline collection.
These were the large 500 plus cubic inch 6 cyl moline diesels, I seem to remember 5 tractors by one owner. In the center of the battery tray that originally held 3-12V batteries sat a single little Exide Orbital(A clone of the Optima,a spiral cell AGM battery) They all fired right up and ran the parade twice per day. The rest of the time the tractors were parked in the Moline section on thresher man's hill. Great starting battery technology, I have those Optima and Exide orbital, spiral cell AGM batteries in most of my equipment and have yet to have one fail. The oldest is 16 years old and still cranks like new. Those sealed AGM batteries do not vent corrosive gas or acid, so never any corrosion of cables or battery box.
