Iam looking at 55 to 75 hp tractors. I have 64acres to bush hog and 10acres of pasture. Right now i am useing a MF135 and a INTERNATIONAL 544 both are showing there age. Ihave been looking at New Holland and Kioti tractors. I would like a front end loader and a 12 to 14ft bush hog, any suggestions.

I think I'd be looking for 75+ HP to run that size mower depending on what you're cutting. I'd like to see the mighty 'M' in one of my hay fields with a 15' batwing. There's a difference between a tall crop and a heavy crop.... A heavy crop, short or tall will consume large amounts of power to knock down and shread. You might do it but it will be slow. You may alos fid that 55 hp is the minimum recomended by Deere for that mower... and Deere can be awful bloody optimistic sometimes. Of the two tractors you mention I'd probably go blue, not that I think so much of the fiat based tractor... but I don't know too much about the Kioti. Dealer support ought to be a big factor with either one.

I can pull a 15' cutter behind a 62 pto hp Kubota across my hayfields and pastures with no shortage of power. If I get into 4 foot tall grass that is real thick I gotta shift down one gear. Look at a Kubota. I used to cut them down like everyone else on this board and now own three.

I like the designs of the Kioti, but have not heard great things about them. I'd get the New Holland over it, lots of dealers and support.

What it takes to pull a bush hog all depends on what you are cutting and what the terrain is like
that you are going to be running on. I'm bush hogging some pastures now that I'd love to see someone try to pull a 15 ft' bush hog with anything less than a 100HP tractor.I'm pulling a 10' Sidewinder with a 75HP with fluid in the tires and weights and its marginal a little bigger would be better.Plus the larger tractor won't get the wear and tear a little will.

It never ceases to amaze me that all these folks think you must have 100 HP or more to mow with. That simply is not the case. A 75 HP tractor will handle a 15 foot heavy duty Bush Hog quite well. I and many other farmers here in KY have been pulling 15 footers for years with 50 HP tractors. I even pull one with my old M, and can pull it anywhere in anything. Also pull one with a 584 IH(52 HP). Have pulled a 20 footer with the 584 in lighter pasture clipping. Pulled 20 footer for many years with a 6600 Ford.

Sure. You're right. I pointed out below, if you take a look at the JD website, they have a commercial grade 15 foot cutter that weighs in at 5600# that requres 55+ HP.

HP means very little to a tractor. TORQUE is what counts. A long stroke engine will easily outperform a short stroke. Mike

Not all the time. I know those little orange tractors will outperform the big two bangers with the big long stroke engines. Those engines waste to much power moving large oversized parts. Also horsepower determines work done. You can make a little briggs turn out torque with the right gearing but the work done will amount to squat.

Might pull a flail mower that big if you are maintaining an airport or something with not very big grass between cuttings.

I'd want more hp for that big a brush hog on unkept grass. Tall grass can suck up the power.

Lot of acres to just cut & waste.

Go to the John Deere website and look over their rotary cutters. They'll tell you the min HP required. For as much acreage as you have you might look at their HX14 or CX15. That CX15 is rated to cut 4" material. 55+ HP required. You might get sticker shock when you go to the "build your own" page but if your dealer doesn't offer 20% off list, keep looking until you find one that does. Check out the weight of those machines. CX15 weighs in at 5615#. You need at least a 6000# tractor for that one. More is better.

For that big of bush hog you're going to need close to 100HP unless it's like a lawn. Lots of choices for tractors. Depends how much you want to spend. A 12 or 14 ft. bush hog is going to be pretty pricey by itself. I don't know much about Kioti tractors but I'd see what dealers are near. Dave

I've run a 14' bush hog mower with a JD 2640 (67hp). It was cutting 6' tall grass in an orchard, with power to spare.. right up to the point where the gearbox on the mower gave out. You are looking in the right power range. There's lot of brands to choose from out there.

Yes, but that doesn't matter what they say. Just because you buy a 55 hp mower doesn't mean you need to use a 55 hp tractor. You could get into some big grass with that same mower and tractor, and then you'll be complaining you need MORE horsepower.

10, 15, and 20FT Bush Hog, Rino Servis, John Deere, and several others. I pull a 15ft Rino Servis with a 756D International Row Crop 76HP and have for years had a Terian King 15 ft before that. Smokes a little in heavy weeds pull it in low 4 or 3 only in 3 because it does a better job.

So, I have a 2-wheel drive IH966 (I believe thats 80-90 hp at PTO), 20 acres of 4ft thick grass, small chicken trees...from what i gather from all your letters, i should have no problem pulling a 10' hog. Will I need front wts? Thanx
