I go to buy an oil filter for my F 150 today. I usually buy Fram. I see there are two quality filters regular duty, and suprt duty($3 higher)Seams like years ago there was only one to chose from, and it did the job. Are the super duty filters that much better? Stan

I've got a case of Purolater's in the shop i got off ebay for about $20- they fit the Oliver 1600 and Massey 285, although it's not actually what is called for on the 285, but the specs are actually better for the 1600's filter anyway.

I buy other filters from Automotive Supply. They sell Hastings, and federated which are made by hastingas and use the same filter. My 88 F150 is a LF115. No idea what my car is, only bought one filter from them and still haven't put it on yet.

I'll never by a Fram so help me God.

I use Motorcraft filters and oil, the FL-820S for my F-150 and the FL-1A for my older stuff. Most Wal-Marts have Motorcraft stuff now so you don't have to pay dealer prices for it, I have seen some Mopar stuff there as well but since I don't have one I haven't paid much attention to it.

I don't try to second guess filter purchaes to save a couple bucks. I buy my ag filters from the repective dealer. I know the filters are good plus I'm giving the dealer a little business to keep them in business.

Fram makes filters in several levels of quality.

The ExtraGuard is their bottom end unit, still made with cardboard end plates in many cases. This is the classic and most common Fram, and the worse one they make.

The ToughGuard is a bit bitter, still using cardboard end plates.

The DoubleGuard is possibly a good filter. But it comes with PTFE in it, which has no place in engine oil. Darned expensive!

I don't know what you're calling a SuperDuty, as Fram doesn't make a filter with that name or title.

For lack of the correct name for the better filter, I called it the super duty. I think Framm called it another name. Stan

A Fram filter on a Cummins engine is a ticking time bomb. We have one out in our service drive right now that has the bottom end out because the Fram filter put on by jiffy lube came apart and blocked the oil passages. This is about the 5th time in a couplee years we've seen it.

The owners manual warns about using cheap filters on the Cummins. All I will use on both of mine are the Fleetguard filters. I get them at the local diesel parts house for less than 5 bucks each.

Go here.

The "cheap" Super Tech WalMart brand made by Champion labs is a better filter than the base Fram filter. If you change your oil every 3000 miles it should do the job. Right now Walmart carries the MotorCraft filters for nearly the same price as the Fram filters - thats what I use.

Best filter for the money in my opinion is the Motorcraft FL-1A - I buy them for all our Dodge pickups and my Caravan.

I have used the cheap Fram on my Dodge truck for many years. 360 gas

I have tried Ac Delco and Wix on it and maybe another brand ? but the Fram is the only one that seems to hold the oil in it as when I start it my oil pressure is right there. The other ones took longer. I've put 80,000 ++ miles on it and it now has 172,000 and still going fine.

An auto parts store, a real one not the auto zones had an oil filter cut down display. Wix. Fram and AC Delco. Had cut the can off each and left the paper filter. The wix had the most filter it filled the can. Next was the AC Delco it was about 80 % or so of the area for filter, and last was the Fram it was maybe 50% of the area of the circile. Never and that is a long time have I bought a Fram oil filter after that. When my FIL was trucking he used only WIX oil filters on the big trucks.

25 years ago Fram filters were the best around. Today they depend on soft plasting sealing to cardboard for the antidrain back valve. That's the valve that keeps the oil in the engine when its not running and when that valve fails it means every start is a dry start and that can mean rapid wear.

Ford's Motorcraft filter seems to be significantly better than any Fram. My F-150 takes a FL820S, I think.

There is an oil filter study posted on the internet, I'm not sure where these days. If Kim will let me post a link, google found it first try.

Can't comment on the 2 different Fram filters, but I do know that years ago the best filter available was made by Hastings. It was what they called a depth type filter, didn't just use paper pleats, but instead used more of a foam or sponge like material. For 3 bucks extra I have myself bought the better grade filters. Should mention I use WIX on the tractor, just my opinion a little better filter than the Fram or similar from the discount stores.
