I live in College Station TX and work and go to school. Texas A&M University is here. I am from the Rio Grande valley of TX (as far south and closest to the coast, there are no mountains though?.) Last weekend I traveled down there to see family and spotted the new CaseIH Module Express picker at the local dealers lot. Well as an official tractor nut I had my camera with me, checked it out, its a great concept of a machine. third party image Today while driving out to see my JD B I spotted the John Deere 7760 round module building cotton picker at A&Ms extension farm. third party image
Well as a true JD nut I stopped in and started up conversation with the JD guys and before I knew it I was cleaning out the picking heads with them and climbing all over it. I dont like the idea of cotton being spun around on rubber belts and being wrapped in plastic but its still a neat machine. I have more pictures of both if yall ask for them. Both were in transport mode. I actually followed them with the JD 20 miles to the next "test" site. It will be there until wednesday and then they ship it to California from here. Its one of only 16 working machines. The first two are now in storage at the factory. I hope you enjoy this half as much as I have. Seeing two brand new inventions in the farming industry in one week was a cool thing. PS Thanks onefarmer for the great website on how to post pictures.

Great pictures Caleb. Back in 1988 I visted College Station and saw a football game at A&M. They were playing Rice I think. I haven't seen either picker yet, as I'm not as involved in the cotton industry as much as I used to be. As someone has already said, the Case was trialed here in Australia this year, but as yet there is no sign of the JD. Most people I have talked to seem to like the Case. They have concerns about the plastic wrap on the JDs. In my mind, you will probably get away with less compaction with a smaller module, and after all they only have to stay together until they get to the gin. Still those green in-line heads have a lot going for them. I've been saying for many years that if you could have green heads and a red basket, you would have the perfect picker. As for fires, it's not the problem it was years ago. Pressure doors are plastic and chute blockages are rare. Most fires these days are caused by loose slat bars being struck by a spindle. I reckon the best thing to do if you get a fire in one of these new pickers woud be to spit the lot out the back.

Hey glad to help. I should do one for modern view also, but it's so easy I don't think I need to.

I just toured the Ankeny Iowa plant. That cotton picker with the built-in baler is $650,000.00

1. I am partial to red, and it just makes sense to use something that fits into the current operation.

2. I can't see how that you are gonna handle the round bale. It will be heavy. Special equipment.

3. The gins don't want the plastic wrap. I would hate to see a gin stand after it had melted, crammed, plastic in it.

4. The gins are set up to feed the standard module, they are gonna have to spend money to change what they have already. The red machine fits what they are doing with no money spent.

5. I have seen a baler catch fire and burn a tractor. Think, a baler, fixed to a picker, that you can't seperate. That would be a $500,000 fire plus.

Hey colekicker,
I totally agree with you on ALL of your points. I even said that to the engineer that was here and I really need a job in Deeres marketing because they "actually believe" that its a better concept than CaseIh's. Their rebuttle to the case module is that a machine using augers to build a module cant pack it tight enough. Granted tha tmay be true, but a machine that costs 700 grand, still requires a tractor in the field, burns 300 gallons of fuel in 11 hours and is a fire trap. Im not so sure this ones gonna be a home run. I have heard from a CaseIH regional manager that I know that the Case machine is sold out for the next two years. That sounds a little far stretched but the JD unit technically isnt in production yet. Who knows, red green it doesnt matter its still very neat to see the engineering feats in both of them and see new technology firsthand. My guess is Case will sell five of their machine for every one JD sales. Heres a picture of the bale carrier on and 8000 series Deere, that was with the picker.

Cool pictures. My neighbor (central Iowa) is one of the primary engineers for the Deere machine. He's tested the machines DownUnder, and will soon head to the delta area. He promises that he'll take me through the plant (Ankeny, Ia) in the near future...can't wait.

I knew CaseIH had one,saw it on TV.They only make a module half the size of normal though don't they? Didn't know Deere was testing one.

We don't see any of those cotton pickers up here in Ohio. But we do have the Farm Science Review put on by OSU. I went last thursday and man were there a lot of neat toys.
