Finally made the 1 hour trip to see my son in laws, grandfathers round barn.

They just rebuilt it a year ago. Orginally built in 1880's by son in laws great great grandfather.

Very interesting concept to barns. Silo up the middle. With hay stacked around it. Barn track curves around the silo at the peak.

There's several of them around Champaign, IL. The one on the west side of town was the centerpiece of the Round Barn Convention center, and is now a Famous Dave's resturant. It's a big one with 2 stories and a loft. It appears that they tried hard to preserve the originality, with lots of the structure exposed inside. Another is owned by the University of Illinois on the south side. I think they are in the process of moving it, after folks had a fit about them tearing it down for a new construction project. I'd hate to see any of them demolished.

You could be right on the year.

I couldn't remember the year for sure but thought it was in the 1880's.

Have you been to see this one or did you see it in the paper?

Gary

West of Aurora, IN the Mack dealership is in a rebuilt round barn. It's so rebuilt that it is hard to tell it actually was a barn, with concrete block walls and truck access to the second floor, but still, it is round.

Very nice barn. There is one in southwest kansas that was built as a horse barn. When you get into the hayloftif you stand anywhere but in the center you get an echo, but when you stand in the center the echo goes away. Truly an odd sensation.

"Don't you just love it when a plan comes together."

We build them bigger out here but then we do have more space.

There is one a few miles south of me. Most in this area were built by Scandinavian builder's from Sweden or Denmark. It was considered a labor saving device, but the were harder to build, and didn't catch on as much here.

Wow that is a nice one! Does the silo need a cap put on to finish the job? Very pretty.

Gary--the round barns are a neat piece of history. In SW WI Vernon county, we have 15 of them still standing. All of them were built by the same guy, the son of a slave who escaped to WI via the underground railroad.

Most of the ones he built were out of wood and covered with tile.

There are a few in NE Iowa Allamakee County, right across the river from us.

How do they handle the gases from the silo? Some pretty scary stuff from what I hear.

That short silo with an open top shouldn`t ever be a problem.. The one I had seen had a track system to pile loose hay in the middle. They would milk around the outside and feed hay out of the middle..

There`s a barn similar to that about 20 miles north of us. When I was little, my cousins and myself were riding with my grandpa. We drove by the barn and he told this story of how a guy died in it because he couldn`t find a corner to go to the bathroom in. Gramps was one of those sober faced guys, who could pull off a ridiculous story like that and have three kids believe him.
So, now any time I see a round barn, I can`t help but wonder how many people lost their lives in it....

My grandpa used to tell the same story about a round barn around here. Must have been a running joke of that generation.

Yes the Iowa Barn Foundation helped with a grant to rebuilt this one.

They put up $20,000 and the grandfather had to match it.

It cost $40,000 to rebuild. The roof was pretty much rotted away.

You can see the before and after photos of the barn on the Iowa Barn Foundation Web site. Look for "Dighton Barn" in Delaware county.
