OT for Tire experts/ Is this gonna be trouble?

Lost this tire on the horse trailer coming from N. Va on I95 Sat. night. On the side of I95 at night with 2 kids upset and 2 horses excited and stomping ain't a whole lotta fun.
Bought a new tire this week and put it on today.
Noticed the tire I paid for and had mounted was a ST225/75/D15. Tires on trailer are ST225/75/R15.
I don't know what made me do this but I got the tape measure out and checked the circumference.
New tire is ~2in shorter than the tires on the trailer. &ft~3in verse 7ft~5in. I measured the spare which did not have much tread wear.

Can I use this tire with any of the ones on the trailer or should I use it as the spare? What are my options.

Over the years I have mixed several tire sizes and types on my tandem axle trailer with no problems. It has always handled well and I have had no mechanical failures of any components. Like the small print on the TV ads say: Your results may vary.

Get the tire off, run your spare, and trade the tire you bought for the correct tire. IF it were my trailer, I would have all radials on it. I have been in the tire business for 30 plus years, and could tell you of many catastrophic failures under the same situation. It is not worth the few dollars you may lose, to have someone hurt or killed. JohnG

Thanks again everyone. Yea John, my buddy called the guy back at NAPA today and after a few minutes he came back on the phone and said "o-yea I found the R one,didn't know the difference, just a few more $, bring it on back and we will make it right".

I wasn't trying to mis-match them just to save a $ just looking for the best deal on a correct match. Believe me safety is on my mind. Broke down on the side of the interstate with 3 lanes of traffic blowing by ya at 70+ ain't no picnic.

Just gotta wait for a day off for my buddy to take it back. He goes to check on his aging parents at least once a week. 100+ miles round trip.

Think I'd carry the new one for a spare, try to have a matched set on same axle, and even better yet, would be a matched set all around. Different rolling diameters could prove to be a problem down the road, (pun intended!) Will put stresses on several components that could lead to premature failures.

Besides what BJ pointed out about mixing radials and bias-plies on the same axle, you have a difference in rolling diameter. If your trailer, as a lot of horse trailers do) had torsion spring axles, you'll be putting more weight on the taller tires. The shorter tire will not be meeting the ground with the same pressure and not carrying as much weight as the other three.

How old are these tires? Trailer tires are a pain because they often wear out from atrmospheric exposure long before the tread. If they're over 5 yrs old, I'd replace the other three on the ground with the same type you just bought, and keep your spare aired up.

The D tire is a bias ply tire.
What do you do, and will it be an issue.
Sense you have miles on it now, I ask you did it feel squirrely and difficult to handle, with above horse shifting tendency to weave behind you?
If it did not, the answer is drive on, all is well.
If it felt at all less directionally stable, use it as a spare, with caution. The very minor difference in running radius, axle center to concrete will be less than a quarter inch I would guess. That is no issue at all. Handling is very affected by mixed tires, so if it seems fine, I would run it. JimN

Thanks guys for the quick replies, you must be at work like me on a Friday night.

Well it ain't hit the pavement yet. When I was putting it on today something made me measure it.
Might have been the fact that I was sitting here Monday with my buddy when he called the NAPA service center where his brother works to see if they sold them. "Sure we'll have it for you tomorrow". $63 mounted on the rim, right good deal I thought. My buddy picked it up for me and brought it to work Thurs. He's kinda POd he didn't check behind them or question what the difference was between the D & R.

I would take it off (carefully) and get the correct tire, It might be fine, but why risk an issue that is avoidable. Many happy returns. JimN

Only thing I know is I am guilty of doing the same only I got two smaller tires on one axle. And it dont cause me trouble.

I believe the tire you just bought is a bias ply tire the "R" in the size of the other tires you have denotes a radial tire I have been told you should not mix radial and bias tires on the same axle
