How does one put a battery charger on a positive ground tractor? Do I need to disconnect the battery? It doesen's seem right to hook the positive clamp on a grounded terminal.

With a plough attached and in work, the tractor chassis should be pretty well grounded. third party image

There is no ground on your car, truck or tractor. There is a ground on the AC equipment in your house, barn & shop. Your car, truck or tractor has a "chassis return".

In some metal cased chargers the case is connected to the negative output so you don't want to set the charger ON the tractor where it can tough the tractor or it will short the battery with positive ground.

Gerald, so right in some cases. Very important on those tractors that use two 12 volts for a 24 volt system and you are charging one at a time. Not a bad idea in all cases.

Gleen, On so many automobile repair instructions they advise; disconnect the ground. If we all asked more questions and got good advice it would save some screw-ups.

On the newer cars this is good advice because of the many computerized items in them, but on an old antique tractor it really doesn't matter that much.

Glenn, Stop n think, as far as the relationshiop between the battery and charger (+ to + - to -), what difference does it make that a big hunk of iron (tractor) just happens to be hanging onto one of the battery posts??

Hi Glenn Don't need to disconnect...just hook your battery charger positive to positive and negative to negative.

hook the charger up, postive to positive, negative to negative. the charger doesnt care which post is used as a ground.

Forget what/how the battery is mounted on/in and concentrate on the battery itself.

Positive to positive and negative to negative. :>)

I just bought a new 6/12 volt charger and the instructions say never to place the positive on the battery in a positive ground situation, hook it to a good ground on the metal itself. Seem to work fine for me.

Sheeee...Wonder if that was writen by the same guy in China that writes all of my computer instructions. Charger should be hooked as close as posible to the battery, not out on some external wire connection. All though any where will work.

So I blew that one...They do that so the spark, if there is one, is not right at the battery. Too early in the morning.
