I need to erect a shelter in the new cow yard. The yard is on the south side of a 300" double decker chicken barn. How big of a 3 sided wind/rain shelter should I build? There will be 4-6 young dairy steers, and possibly 2-3 bred cows using it. One person said 8x8 or 8x16 one said 8x8 is plenty, yet another said 12x24, that seems awful large. Also, when it is erected should I add a few inches of gravel to the gound in it? I need something up, but dont have alot of time, and do not want to high of bill to build it, I am trying to get this all completed with sweetcorn cash that I have left so I dont pull out of savings. I have a few 2.5 month old diary steers that will be going in there within a week.

A point to consider is taxes. In Indiana a permanent building is taxed on your property taxes, a pipe frame shelter that can be moved is not. Check your county government, also a building permit may be required for a permanent building.

I've got 40 big brood cows I'm running in a 20x50 slant roof open sided. Are you ever planning to add any more? I think I'd go 20x20 or so. Get it deep enough for them to get back in it. Open it straight south, not south east. Nothing worse than a storm from the east.I wouldn't worry about too much gravel as long as its built on high ground with a slight slope running away from it.You'll be amazed just how little time they'll spend in there. They'll spend more time laying around the round bale feeder.

I usually have 5-7 400 pounders over winter in a 3 sided 9x16 homemade pole shed on skids facing south. Once the ground freezes, I put a stack of cornstalk bedding down (that is about twice as needed) and then add part stacks during the winter as needed. No need to spend money on gravel. Every couple years I drag the shelter to a different spot. They stay dry, and rarely are all in there at the same time. I think 10 animals of that size would be fine. A friend does about the same thing, but puts sawdust down first, then adds cornstalk bedding as needed. I live in central Wisconsin.

Dave what exacly are you trying to build? Are you building a calf shelter or a barn? If you are trying to build a barn say go big say 20X40 just start off with a windbreak the first year. The next put he sides or roof on. The final year finish it off what ever the budget allows. Now if you are building a calf shelter then yes you can build smaller say 10X16 for just the young stock.

Just want to put up a shelter for for sure these 4-6 <3 month olds. I also am keeping my eye open to buy a couple bred beef cows this fall yet , or in the spring. Which would be utilizing it as well. The stucture will not be the only area they will be in. The "yard I am fencing up is about 100'x 300' +/-, which will open for them to move about. Adjacent to the "shelter", I am also building a small corral which should end up being 12'x 16', basically an extention of 12' from the open side(south) of the shelter-Which of course is railroad ties and cattle panels. I will continue to rear the week old calves to 7-8 weeks in my future shop shed where they are now in 4'x8'pens. So on that tid bit of info, any one see a problem with this set up.

Have you considered using portable shelters? Just move to a new spot occasionally. Size? Dairy loafing sheds used to figure about 30 square feet per adult animal. Nine head in 8x8- couldn't even get them all in there!

I build a few shade shelters for my animals.. It's easy to drop in 4 landscape timbers into the ground 2.5' and then box out a top on them using 4 8' 2x4, and then add a runner down the middle.. IE 5 2x4 and 4 posts to make an 8x8 shelter.. plus 4 sheets of 5V tin.

For yuors.. I'd make it more like 8x16 or 8x20. So.. just get 6 10' 2x4 or 3-16' for the long span, plus the 8' sides, and the timbers for the legs with a set on each end and in the middle.

way cheap and the cows apreciate it.

I would figure at least 16 square feet per bred animal maybe a little less on the steer calves around here we let the cows go in the timber and ditches and they make it very well my expierence with a shelter of sorts is they crowd in there and sweat then go out and get pnuemonia so build it large. You all up north probably do have to provide better shelter than we do in the winter.

I agree that 8x8 seems awful small for up to 9 head. I'd go 8x16 or 12x16 - whatever is most convenient.

Are you going to have the bred cows and the young steers running together?

Concur on the gravel (if you can). If the ground freezes hard enough to drive on, you can clean it occasionally (say 1/month) and really help control the muck. If you pile it up where the cattle can walk on it, they will bed down on the muck pile, too.

A couple years we used 12' panels for the sides, with (3) 16ft 2"x6"'s to support the metal roof and (3) more 2x6's over the metal to "tie down" the roofing. We used metal fence posts to anchor the panels. It wasn't pretty, but it did the trick, and we had all the material on hand.

I think we had ~20 head of light feeders (400 - 600 lbs in the fall).

Hi Dave,

My main cattle shelter is 16x60 and that is big enough for 40 stock cows. Now that I have more than 40, a few can't always get in, but at least they can stand out of the wind and they still get some body heat off from the other cows. I have a 15x18 for 5 of my wife's horses, and that is about right. I know what you're saying on the money deal, but what ever size you build, make it easy to add on to in the future. That way your shelter can grow with your herd if need be. I think the 12x24 size is a good way to go, but anything is better than nothing. I don't see how an 8x8 will be nearly big enough, 8x16 would be packed full with the animals you mentioned.
Yes, use a few inches of gravel in the floor. If you don't it is nothing but a mire hole in the spring. I just skim the manure off the top in layers in the spring as it thaws, and then stop at the gravel line. I am going to add a couple of loads to the 16x60 this fall, but I have not added any in 12 years so that's not to bad.
Good luck with your project!
