Cut one from a fir 2 x 4 some years ago for my fil. I think it worked ok. We cut an extra just for the heck of it. Fir is tough and impact resistant.

If you purchase a universal fit pitman, you should assemble the sickle end first, attach to the sickle, adjust the "register" (sickle sections are centered in the guards at the extreme end of outward travel), rotate the pitman drive to the extreme outward travel position, and then mark where to drill the drive end holes.
This proceedure will assure that the sickle will give you a full cut(centered in guards at both the in and out travel limits).
Take your time and the result will be worth your efforts.

What do they cost at CNH?

I bought a couple for DEERES I'm fixing up, this fall, and could believe how CHEAP they were, about $16.00 for a # 5 pitman, stick, for example.

That must be the cheapest part on their shelves, nowadays!

I use hickory, seems a bit more flexable than oak.

Could be. I don't have any experience with hickory. It doesn't grow where I live.

farm and fleet sells a universal fit pitman arm, you cut and drill it to fit your mower. last one i got was around 10 dollars or so, use the old pitman as a template.

Thanks for the replies. I tried TSC store. Only had a NH one (had the right number of holes but two inches too short). I'll try CIH next. If the price is high, the the local lumber yard for some oak

CNH dealer price is double TSC.TSC store Im headed for today has a universal type for 10.00.They have 16 pitman sticks in the catalog but only stock 3 types in the store I go to.Drilling and slotting is not an easy job but I will make my own after paying double for the last one. There is less than a board foot in a pitman stick so you are paying 50.00 a board foot at the CNH dealer.Make sure your blanks have a straight grain and avoid red oak.
