Tonight I needed to start the skid steer and found the key had been left in Acc. position. Battery dead as dead can be. When I put jumpers on I attached Red to Red and Black to Black, well I guess the cables are bassackwards cause when I looked down towards the battery ,smoke was coming up and there was smoke coming from Alt.also the jumper cables where getting hot fast. So I quickly pulled the cables off reversed them and it started just fine. Now the Alt light is staying on and after running it about 20 minutes I shut it off ,tried to start again and still flat dead.....Did I cook somthing?

You fried the alternator, but it is repairable. Bet you learned to not trust going by color- need to maintain polarity when jumping a battery.
