During harvest I've been driving a '99' International 9400 semi with a 465? cummins, and if it's shut down warm and then re-started the yellow check engine light will come on and about a minute later the red engine shut down light comes on and a few seconds later the computer will kill the engine. It will start up right away after recycling the key, but it will do this three to six times before decides to keep running for good. It does not do this when started up cold. The antifreeze level is good and the oil pressure is in the 30 - 40 lb range depending on RPM's. Went to the dealer with it about a week ago and he scanned it with a hand held and a lap top. They cleaned some wires, including the pattery cables and sent me on my way. The problem came back right away but we've been running hard and I haven't had the chance to take it back. Anybody have any ideas? Coolant level sender? Oil press sender? RPM sender? It's not running hot. It does this whether it's been shut down for one minute or fifteen minutes. It's very unnerving to pull out on the highway trying to beat traffic and have it conk out halfway out. Jim

Time to head back and get the codes shat out again. I'm guessing a loose wire or bad connection somewhere, but I don't know much about them. Never really had any trouble with the Celect system...

these darn computers are going to be the ruin of eveything. the codes that they set are not always true. i say get rid of all auto engine computers and go back to the old way of the 1950's. the mileage was not all that great and the pollution was somewhat more, but no computers to become fickle and defy all attempts to repair the system. i don't think anyone really understands the computers and how to deal with them. it's a matter of hit or miss when diagnose and repair. some computer problems could actually be dangerous if the computer shuts down while the truck is running on the highway. computers are just aggravating.

As dangerous as dying at the wrong times can be, and since your dealer apparently guessed wrong or struck out once, you might want to:
(A) Dig around on the internet (or at your dealers!) for the TSB"s on yours, to see if any mention irregular dying (watch the language:TSB"s can get creative at times-things like "irregular engine stoppage" or "engine light malfunction");
(2) ask if your dealers shop, or any of his mech (oop), techs have a membership in IATN (Int"l Automotive Technicians Network): it"s a cooperative computer net of techs, to post problems that don"t seem to be cured by the factory instructions and that local techs can"t find. If not, he should at least subscribe to Alldata (which has the reputation of not having all the data!). If they"ve processed a code, and it didn"t help, the problem may be upstream of the code (something malfunctioning not because it"s bad but because it"s getting a bad signal or reading from something else-these can be tricky. good luck.

Noncom, thanks for the info. This gives me an idea of where to start. Every machine has it's certain quirks that the experienced person will pick up on, and I'm just not that experienced. Thanks again. Jim

If you unplug the water level sender you can run it and see if it still has the problem .

Did not repair people get any fault codes? I would think any of the scenarios you suggest would set a code.

Yes, I forgot to mention that. They said they got some codes that led them to what they did, but I was in a hurry to get the truck back to the field so I didn't question them much. Jim
