k321 overhaul-now i am confused

posted this subject on the garden tractor board,try it here too.putting new rings,piston and valves in 321 kohler.question to bore or not.some guys said yes.was at the the repair shop today to pick up some parts and asked the hands on owner where to get it bored.he said unless there is a top ridge or scored up don't bore, he also said not to hone it,said those dill hones do more damage than good.thought you at least had to deglaze so rings would set,he said no,they will set just fine,said he does it that way all the time with no problems.any thoughts on this?

thanks guys.i'm 61 and still on a learning curve. i do have a manual on the way.as far as the guy at the repair shop,he's been there for years and i have known him for years i would assume he would know his business,when i questioned him about his advice he said trust me,these people-meaning kohler-are the ones i've taken classes from.so i hope you can see where i'm comming from. just trying to get all the differant opinions.

I used to deliver auto part out of a large warehouse that had a inhouse shop ,I brought in hundreds of kohlers that were bored or had cranks turned ,they may look good but if you invest the time and money and take it to a machine shop first before ordering any parts and let them measure it first . some of these shop rebuilds went on to run for another 20 years or so ,infact I own a 312 allis mower that a landscaper had in our shop 15 years ago and he put thousands of hours on it after a total rebuild and it still starts and runs like a near new one . your just thinking you are SAVING MONEY but in the long run on a kolher your just wasting it .

Larry,

Mic the bore , if it is out of limits, bore it and hone to size and proper finish.As
far as hones are concerned , my guess is that he
is talking about the cheap spring loaded type
and he is quite right , they are junk. They do
not do anything to true the shape of the cylinder , they will not correct an out of round condition or a tapered cylinder. All they
do is follow the contour of the worn cyl and
maintain those faults. Use an adjustable hone
and it will correct both out of round and taper.

As a machine shop and engine rebuilder I have
done many things from too small to get a boring
bar in to D-8 cats and a few things with bores
larger than a D-8 .I have hone extensions to do up to 15 inch bore.Also have boring bars that
go to at least 8" and if that is not enough , I have a horizontal boring mill that will probably do 36" .

Last thought , if it is out of specs , don't try to get by with a hone and ring job as it
will come back to haunt you.

Definitely break that glaze, don't mistrust yourself, you're smart, you're getting that idea of what is right in your head. Have the bore mic'ed and/or take it to a machine shop where they can give you recommendations. If the bore is too big for the ring gap to be proper (also excess piston slop), you will need to have it bored to MATCH the next oversize size piston.

You're on the right track, just have it mic'ed for fit of a new piston.

If you follow his suggestions you will be back on here crying the blues. Find a local auto machine shop that does a lot of engine work and have them look at the block and measure it and the crankshaft. I had this done on a B&S cast iron
block. It needed to be bored .020" oversize and the crankshaft ground .020" undersize. It needed a new exhaust valve too. I put new main ball bearings in too. I did the teardown and assembly.
This was done 14 years ago and I'm still using the engine. Hal

Unless he "mic'ed" the bore, his advise isn't worth a "plug nickel".

Why don't you "cut through the B.S.", and look at the Kohler service manual, on-line at the link below. Section 11, "Inspection and Repair" is a good place to start.

It explains how to "mic" the cylinder bore, and how to break the glaze with a hone.
