Ok guys here goes opening a old can of worms here. I know some of you all on here are pretty well to do but there are some of us that are just poor ole country boys that work the land for a living. These gas prices are killing the little guys out here when it takes over a hundred bucks just to fill up your truck and I'm even scared to ask what farm diesel is going for. Something is going to have to be done here or you are going to see a bunch more major problems showing up along with the ones this country has allready.

The stations are so observant they raised the gas prices last wednesday from 2.82 in the morning to 2.88 by 4:00 pm just in time for the evening rush after work hours then lowered back to 2.83 the next morning. That $ucks!Raising prices because of the need and gouging is two different things.Lawmakers don't say much because of thier earnings, why stir things up when you are making money hand over fist as fast as they can?I have cut back so much so I haven't been on vacation in a couple of years now and even carpooled with my wife on her way to work leaving me without a ride lots of days.Having a vehicle used to be considered a luxury and a real convienience.China is going to autos from bikes and we are going from vehicles to bikes it seems like.

I am 26 years old and married. My wife and I have been together for 10 years now. We have 2 children and we made not even 40,000 last year. We own our home, which we are of course still paying on it, and we drive decent vehicles. Too many people these days don"t want to work to save some money. I bought this mini farm from my parents, with 5 acres, why not save some money. This year I canned close to 600 jars of food, froze a ton of veggies, and cut and split 6 1/2 cords of wood by hand. No gas bill and a small grocery bill. I work my a** off to have what we have, but the important thing is we don"t live beyond our means. I believe alot that life is what you make of it. If your not willing to get your hands dirty, then you will pay through out life. The only way to protect yourself from the high gas prices, it to try to work around things, and save somewhere else to make up for the cost of gas. I believe that the economy is doing horrible, but hopefully someday things will change. This year was a good year for us, but now the wife is back in school for her LPN. Gas is eating us up, but after this is over things will be better.

This was the best reply I have read on this board in a long time. I am totally with you. Hard work and living within your means are the answer to a lot of this countries problems. We make more easy money here than anywhere in the world and probably have the lowest savings rate anywhere. You need to get your message across to about a hundred and fifty million americans!

I haven't been paying attention to gas prices lately, and now that I look back through my reciepts over the week, I can see where the station has inched up in 3 cent increments to $3.00 a gallon. I tell ya, they play games with our minds, they drop the prices so it's like "whoo hee, gas prices went down"- and THEN they turn around and raise it SLOWLY towards a higher price so we'd never notice!

We need to shut that market down that is based on all speculation such as hurricanes, shortages, predictions, basically things that have not happened but MIGHT. The prices rise and fall with media hype for the day. Those crooked traders just bid the price up for their own pockets and it goes higher and higher so they can make out like crooks.

I was told i should work harder instead of complaining about gas prices. I took that to the bank and they threw me out. I'm onea them poor country boys too. When rush tells me to work harder, i think he just doesn't have any idee how much we really do out here to possibly make a livin and end up with some cash to retire on. I guess we shoulda all not got married and became radio broadcasters. Yep, that woulda done it. :^D

I think if you get 100+ barrel oil, tight credit, and inflation at 6 to 10%, a recession or depression will come along pretty quick. I think this year's auto contracts might be an indicator as to which way things are going.....

And this is why we should be building windmills, solar panels and nuclear power plants so we are much less dependant on foreign oil. We should make them dependant on us.

I have been looking at the latest special issue of Farm Show and there are several articles there about hydrogen and one that tells of a man who built a small hydrogen generator (about the size of two 12 V batteries) and put a 100 amp alternator and a propane carburator on the engine in his vehicle and is running on the hydrogen as it is produced. Pour in a little water once in a while and you go. To generate hydrogen basically you run an electrical current through water, which is what he is doing in his generator. Why don't we see more hydrogen stuff going on? Water for fuel, water for exhaust.

Its the result of a long stretch of being wasteful and living far above our means on credit here in the US.Landfills are filled to the brim with junk we thought we had to have on credit. We Americans build houses too big that use too much energy.Own vehicles that burn too much fuel.Throw money (our wealth) away on things we don't need.So if we want to go to find the person responsible just go look in the mirror. The chickens have come home to roost and they are on ther poles above us so the sh#ts gonna fly.But as the saying goes when the going gets tough the tough get going.

I live in a 1300 square foot house and drive a 2000 ford focus that gets around 35 mpg. I don't think thats being wasteful. I think thats just cheap talk to try to blame on everybody in the USA.

If you'll give me a minute here, I'll crawl up on top of this box....There, I'm ready!

Your point is well articulated/taken. I did not take it personally. I do NOT mean to come across as arrogant or selfish, but anyone can dog my steps all day and they will detect very little waste. While I wouldn't have to, in many ways I live like a pauper. When something actually ends up out by the road at my house, I am confident it would be of NO value to anyone. Our vehicles are both about 20 yerars old and have a total of 400,000 miles on them. I could site numerous more examples.

I agree, America is paying the price for its reckless, extravagant living in the past and present. But what really upsets me is that the responsible/disciplined ones end up holding the bag. I don't claim to be an economics expert, but you know those of us who have done without in an effort to make ends meet, pay off our mortgages as quickly as possible, etc. end up paying for all the bank forclosures, bankruptcies, free school lunches, student aide at colleges, etc., etc. Well do I remember as a kid seeing our neighbors having all the snowmobiles, mini bikes, cars and trucks we couldn't afford. Well, the truth is, they couldn't afford them either, and guess who ends up paying the bill? I suppose I kind of strayed from the point, but I sure feel a lot better now.

With our Canadian dollar escallating in strength and the price of oil climbing it makes our Canadian Oil Sands more viable every day. Alberta is quite a place to live as the so called "BOOM" continues on with Oil and Gas development. Lots of Diesel Crew Cab Duallys continue to run around with only the driver in the cab. Average family today sports a minunmum of two to three vehicles to commute which is quite different then the 1950s. Stop and think: how many clocks or time pieces do we have in our homes compared to 50 years ago, and has it made our life easier or are we really in that fast lane? Ellis

Yep, its the snowball effect and until we wake up and do something other than complain things will only get worse. I think we need to stop dwelling on the "feed the world" mentality and concentrate more on our own "neighborhoods". Get back to where the things that we need to survive are being grown and manufactured in the USA. Take an active part in government and make these so-called representatives accountable for their actions. If you don"t like what they are doing then vote them out! Until we all do this we might as well hang on for the bumpy ride ahead.

Lets looks at some hard facts.5 years ago it cost 700.00 for fuel oil last year 1800.00.RE tax under 1000.00 now 1861.00.Mail book business that made about 2000.00 per year gone.Took my SS at 62 because my shop work was falling off fast.Sharpening tools used to bring in a grand a year now only do a few planer blades.Used to build and sell 40 picnic tables in summer, sold 8 this year.My price went from 80.00 to 115.00 over 10 years.Just followed material prices as they went up.Country store thats been open for 150 plus years closed last month. Two nearby towns lost their store 2 years ago, never reopened. If fuel goes to 3.00 I need 100 gals a month After oil, phone and electric is paid I ll have 50.00 left for the month.Farm and truck ins will eat the 50.00.My wife is still working as a secretary, without her income the farm would have be sold.Ive lived here for 42 years worked for myself most of those years.Never had a mortgage always paid as we went along .I dont use credit cards.I see people buying groceries with credit cards here. The whole thing is going the drain.I cut 6 cord of wood every year but at seventy I wonder how long I can continue .I worked at various town jobs over the years,Constable, dog catcher, building inspector. The pay was bare bones.I always had money to give the church even though I dont attend.Thats all gone.Small auto garages are getting 0ver 50.00 per hour and padding the bill to boot. The greed I see is unbeleivable.

Yep and if something doesn't happen soon we may go into a depression and if that happens it will really get bad. You figure every time gas goes up so does every thing else in the stores because it cost more to deliever the goods. A friend of mine owns a pawn shop and he say every week more and more people are pawning things just so they can buy gas to go to work.

Yup,

we're not rich either and with my wife driving 50 mi/day to work and me driving 65mi/day, plus putting gas in our p/u so my daughter can get to school and such, gas has become a major monthly expense. And every year, our health insurance bill goes up. We haven't had raises in 5 yrs. The answer? We just don't go out to dinner as much or go clothes shopping or ever go to a movie or sporting event, etc.. There's only so much income and when one expense goes up, we just have to suck it up and cut back somewhere else. Just wish the federal government would do the same. Local govts are trying to cut back, but they do it by cutting back on services (which means layoffs). They need to cut back on salaries and benefits that were given in better times. That's what happens in the private sector. JMHO

Gary

It jumped up 23 cents overnight here last week. I drive 20 miles per day one way 5 days a week. This is going to put a crunch on things for me. A fellow I know that follows the stock market pretty close said they predict oil to be $160.00 a barrel by this time next year. The rich just keep getting richer. My prayer is that someday those that are in control will realize that they can't take it with them. Even if they take it with them it will surely not last long in the flames where they are headed.

Only 20% of people own stocks. Its not a very good indicator because the market will go up at a time when it should drop.Fuel oil is 3.00 a gallon ,kerosene 3.50 here.Gas was 3.15 yesterday.Made a trip to get my wife some birthday presents. The big store parking lot was almost empty.I bought a few basic groceries, noticed women with grocery carts piled high.Looks like they are stocking up for a tough winter.5 years ago I could buy 100 gal of fuel oil for 100.00 now takes 300.00.Thats 200.00 stolen by the fat cat oil co.Two economists said this wouldnt affect peoples buying habits. They probably get 100 grand a year.I wonder why fuel oil is selling for the same price as gasoline.Should be 50 cents less minus taxes.
