I"m going to buy my first new tractor. Who makes the best for the money? I just bought 20 acres of wooded property that eventually I hope to raise goats on when I retire. I want a tractor with a front loader.

If its one of the newer tractors then get 4 wheel drive you will need it I have to Kubota's on 4 wheel drive the other two wheel drive these light tractors need some extra help in traction. also if you are on hilly land then spread the wheels out or you are going to get a headache.
size an options will have to be up to you don't one two small to do the work that you ant to or too big as it will be a pain in the back trying to use it. Walt

Get whatever you have a local dealer for. Of 29 brands of tractors, there are only 6 actual manufactureres. Same tractors, different names.

Wooded property and goats sounds like you'll be cutting trees and probably wanting to dig some sumps and such.

I'd surely spend the extra $$$ to put a backhoe on it, and look at 40-45 hp at minimum.

My brother has a 3030 Kubota, he has been about 90 percent satisfied (main issue was at about 6 months the backhoe hydraulics had lead through (i.e., hoe falls to the ground overnight) that the dealer could not fix).

It is a handy little machine - until you need a bigger one.

Agco which is also Massey ferguson. Not too expensive for the small size. 25 HP range.

There is a FarmTrac dealer near me and they are having great luck selling those. I have a Ford from the 80's that they copy and would love to have a new one.

If I were you though, most of my decision would rest on the closest dealer to you that you think will treat to fairly, before and after the sale. The only way to know that is to visit them. All the big name manufactureres are making good machines now.

I know there will be people who would disagree with me, but a FarmTrac might be a good choice. They less expensive than a John Deere or Kubota, but are a fairly rugged design. Their midsize tractors are identical to the ones made by Ford in the mid '80s, which was essentially the same chassis they used for the 4000/5000 series tractors starting in 1965. Time tested design, nothing real polished though.

A Cockshutt! Ha ha at least it is not made in China :-) Sorry had to bring that up :-)

Seriously, I have heard a lot of nice things from Kubota owners, and 20 acres will be fairly easy on any brand tractor.

Well, is money an issue? If so, what price range is your budget? 20 acres of woods, and raising goats, I guess I would want a utility, older John deere 1020 deisel, 544 or similar. Personally if you only have wooded land and will not be doing tillage just get a skid loader
