Roy- I"m a tool dealer, and I"ve had a lot of these apart. There is no better 1/2" impact made. Even that $400+ Snap-on won"t touch it. The IR is very easy to work on. First remove the 4 long screws from the rear of the gun, set it on it"s back, and lift off the front housing. Lift out the anvil, and check it and the hammers for breakage. If everything looks OK, grease it up and put it back together. The only other thing that can cause your problem is the reversing buttons being out of time. If the gun gets dropped hard on the buttons, it can sometimes make one slip a tooth. It"s kinda hard to explain how to time them, but I"ll try. First you need to remove the buttons by slipping a pocket screwdriver between the buttons and the center wall, and carefully pry them out. Look inside the button holes and you will see the white reverse valve. With your pocket screwdriver, center the valve, then rotate it to the left as far as you think the buttons would normally rotate it. Insert the left button to engage the valve, and push it all the way in. You can then insert the right button, while holding the left button in, till the right one clicks into place. Cycle the buttons a couple times to see if they move normally, and try the gun with air. If the gun sounds the same in forward and reverse, you did it right. If not, remove the buttons again, move the valve one tooth, and try it again. It"s not as hard as it sounds. I don"t know of any other reason for your problem.
