My 79 1T with 4 speed, clutch drags after clutch warming up. Is set tight as possible. Clutch had been replaced less than 5000 mi ago. Disc and pressure plate was NEW not rebuilt and fly wheel reground. This did not start until about 500 mi ago. What could be the cause. I have flushed (spray washed the clutch) in place from the bottom. Made little or no difference. The parts that went in were identical to the ones out.
Thanks

If you have the diaphram type pressure plate, the diaphram spring is broken. Has happened to my 80 K35 twice in the last 22 years.

Did you replace the fork and pivot ball? Did you remember both springs on the return? Did you get the fork retainer clips hooked onto the throw-out bearing properly?

Did you get the bushing halves in the cross-shaft at the frame?

Did you get the bell-housing and tranny bolts tight?

How about those bushings on the pedal pivot up in the cab? How are the rubber bushings in the spring eyes? Is the spring sitting down on the frame?

Just throwin' ideas at ya,

Allan

There is a good (bad) possibility that the disk has a heat issue and warps while in place. I have seen it three times on both new, and well used clutches. The only solution is to replace it.
If your freeplay is at about an inch befor you feel the spring pressure, and the clutch begins to pull when it is just a bit off the floor (even cold) then gets worse to the point it is tough to shift, then I wager it is the disk. JimN

Is it possible that your cab mounts are rusting away? This will allow the cab to drop down, and the clutch linkage is then out of adjustment, and if you adjust it again, the same thing will happen. You might also want to check the pivot points in the linkage for excess wear, or loose mounting bolts.

after turning down a fly wheel you need to add a shim behind the flywheel to make up for what you took off for proper alinement

What kind of shape is the linkage in. After that many years the linkage gets a lot of wear. Both of my late 70's trucks had to have the linkage rebuilt. It wasn't difficult, just welded the pivot points up and redrilled them. On the knob part I welded it up and filed to fit. There are also little plastic bushings that wear out causing metal to metal wear. This is a good time to replace those as well. I did this on Fords, but most mechanical linkage clutches are similar. Good luck.

What do you mean when you say it's set as tight as possible? What kind of toe clearance do you have? What exactly do you mean by drag?

I'd pick on the slave cylinder. I had one once that gave me no end of grief. Even after replacing both the master and slave cylinders, and bleeding the system properly, it never did work right. If you used it every day, it was fine. If you let it set for a week, you had to pump the clutch pedal a dozen times or so.

I got rid of the durn thing before anyone ever figured it out.

What kind of linkage does this truck have? is it a hydraulic clutch? If so, it might be your slave cylinder going out. clutch problems are Commonly MISDIAGNOSED, people don't consider the slave cylinder.

As rusty say hows the cab mounts?? I have a 1980 Chev that the cab mounts are rusted pretty bad and I had to shim up the cab or I also would have clutch problems. Very common problem on all the chevs from 1965 up to around 1990 or so and even the newer ones might have that problem
