There is a set of brand new rear tractor tires that I'm looking at. They have been stored in a barn for about 5 years now and I was wondering what effect high and low temperatures would have on them. Theres only dust on them and they have been kept out of any sunlight.

Sun is the only thing that hurts tires. Ever notice the snowbirds with covers over their camper tires.

Get them and use them if stored inside. May be a little stiff but as long they were'nt in the sunlight (Weathercracks) they will be ok..... ....

If they were new tires and the price is reasonable grab them. They are in better condotion than if they were on a tractor sitting outside for five years.

well, these tires still have a distinct rubber smell to them and being 23.1 x 26 I think I will. Thanks for the replys.

The question reminds me of when I helped my aunt and uncle shingle their house a few years ago. The lumber yard unloaded the shingles in their driveway while they were at the store. My aunt called and asked if it would hurt the shingles to leave 'em outside and get 'em rained on?

As was mentioned, direct sunlight has WAY more effect than heat/cold cycles.

Haha. Might want to send that shingle question to Bill Engvall...here's your sign. (No offense meant to the aunt and uncle, great laugh though :)

Personally I would rather have them than tires that were right from the factory. They probably will be a little harder to mount but they will be more resistant to punctures

go over to the pulling board and ask. There will be guys over their that would fight you for them.
If I was still pulling I would be trying to beat you to them.

I've seen stored tractor rear tires that have turned stiff and would be hard to mount because of that stiffness. I knew they had been around a while because they were Armstrong tires and I saw them several years after that brand was renamed Titan.

I'm having good results with some Armstrong 6 ply on my MF-135 but many report early sidewall breaks.

I just replaced a set of 24 year old Armstrongs with a new set of Titans. They looked 24 years old, but if they had any tread left, I do believe they could have gone another 24. No sidewall failures to report.

Just my opinion, but high & low temperatures would be less of a concern to me than would exposure to sunlight.

I would inspect them carefully and if they look good, they probably are good.

Hey. C"mon...give the tire guys a break, like: how cold was cold???(Frostbite Falls, MN, or Tucson??)...how hot was hot?? (Bangor, WA or Phoenix, AZ??)...what"s the brand name and any designations on sidewalls (some tires aren"t very good to begin with; others wear like iron)...exposures to any strong chemicals (hebicides, pesticides piled around tires??...stuff like that...post a little more info..(with sympathy)...

Yup, not enough info. Considering the "Pennsylvanian" handle there is no telling where this poster is from. Maybe Hawaii?
