Can not really blame it on the lack of rain because I have seen several signs with hay for sale but the price is sure up.
While I was at the feed store saturday I saw a sign on the hay they have for sale.
$6.99 for small square horse quality grass hay.
$13.99 for small square alfalfa.

These high fuel prices has got to be driving the price up. Sure hurting the working man.
I would sure hate to see the price in areas where it is in short supply.

What is the price in your area?? If you can even get it.

Talked to a guy the other day hauling hay to Indiana, small square bales of nice looking mixed grass. Said he'd get $10-12.00 a bale. I can't sell my neighbors 600 lb round bales for $8.00.

I bought some this fall, @ $4, seller said $5 from now on. He isn't going to fire up the tractors unless it is profitable. I don't think we will ever see $2 hay again.

Heard this last week. Farmer in my county in NW N.C. was in grass hayfield ready to start round baling. Woman stops car along field and told him that she wanted to buy the hay in square bales. Not for sale he told her. She persisted and finally said " What will it take to get you to bale this for me in small square bales ?" He, a bit irritated, said $12.50 per bale and you load it yourself. She said " Bale it. " Made 500 bales. Thats $6,250.00. If 50 lbs./bale, price was $500.00/ ton in the field.

I"m in north central Ohio, and it took four cuttings this year to get the same amount of hay I usually get in two. Using more fuel, I sold 4x5 rounds for $35 this year (I was selling them for $25 last year). Ads in the local paper were selling the same size bales for $45-60. There weren"t many ads either. I have some regular customers and I would rather treat them fairly than try to make a couple extra dollars.

I"ve sold out already, but by not trying to get top dollar, hopefully I"ll have the same loyal customers next year.

Dale

Hay here is running $90-140 a ton depending on bale type and quality. For small bales, that would work out to approximately $3-5 a bale. Do you guys actually sale hay by the bale? Its always figured by the ton around here. David

We prefer to buy by the ton, but the guy we've been buying from the last few years only sells by the bale. Don't really lik eit, but the price is still fair compaired to goin to the hay auction.

In TN all my life (43 years) I've only heard of hay selling by the bale (or roll). Of course I've read about it selling by the ton - never known anyone to buy hay by the ton.

Partly drought, partly competition for land from corn wheat and beans which are high. A lot of hay got plowed under for other crops.

I don't think we are going to sell any small square bales for less than $5 and by late winter I wouldn't be sirprised to see hay prices double from a year ago. Here in Iowa hay is in very tight supply and there is alot of demand both locally and from other parts of the country. I think they hay market should remain very strong for the next few years unless we see some wide spread ideal growing conditions that allows the areas suffering from very dry conditions the past several years to catch up. The only thing that concerns me about the hay market is the horse hay market and how the slowing economy could effect that as it appears alot of horse owner's can't afford to feed what they have already.

I am having a difficult time finding buyers myself. It's the opposite of last year when I had no hay. I have 200 4x5 coastal bermuda round bales and no buyers.

Howdy,

Those prices seem low to me. No hay ads in any papers here now. Been that way for over a month. I sold out back in August and sold it cheaper than I'd like to have. Best I got for 2nd cutting alfalfa was around 4.50. Now small squares are going for 8.00 and will probably go higher. Some round bale prices are in the 60.00 neighborhood. A lot of guys are baling corn fodder too. Those bales are going for 25.00. With our drought it's going to be tough on people feeding hay. Sure wish I hadn't sold all that hay last winter for 2.00. I know I won't be pushin so hard anymore just to get the barn empty. Ya just never know. God bless.

by the way, I'm in South central Ohio

The hayreport by USDA out of Birmingham last reported small squares of bahia @ $5.00. Small squares of bermuda were between $5 & $6 dollars. However I have seen ad"s in the local classifieds for small squares @ $3.00 dollars off the farm in Mobile & Baldwin County Alabama. I do expect hay to go up last March hay hit $7.00 for small squares in out area.

If someone is telling you they can get hay for $2.00 don't believe them. They are only trying to make you come down on your price. The days of $2.00 hay is long gone as is the days of $.25 fuel.

Sounds to me like where the hay is going cheap them farmers should be getting together and hiring a transport and selling it where the prices are high. I remember a few years ago seeing transports full of square bales heading from Canada to the USA. Maybe that will happen again. Seems to lots of cheap hay in this part of Ontario.
