We recently purchased an International 584 and the other day, the transmission got locked in low range. The rod has minimal movement up and down and will not switch ranges or lock into place. Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks all,
It turns out that with an older tractor like that, you have to take your time while shifting. Used a rod to force the pin back into place and it runs fine now.
Thanks again

My 584 has gotten hard to shift a few times and I just pull the rubber boot away and spray some oil all around the mount and lever hole, usually lets go and shifts smooth for a long time 'till it needs some oil again

I've been there and done that several times with a 584 and a 454. Remove the sheet metal directly in front of the shift linkages. It would be directly behind your left foot, a vertical piece. You'll see where the two shifter levers enter the transmission. One of those needs to be forced backwards to the rear of the tractor. I can't remember which one, if it was the inside or outside lever, but it doesn't take much guessing. You'll definitely know when you've got it slid back into place, and the trans will work fine after that.

Been there a hundred times with our old 584, the ball between the shift linkage in in a track that gets worn and lets the two rods get out of sync and jammed. You can tap it with a hammer from the underside to pop it back.

Ours had been broken off and welded to the tranny shift rod at some point in its life so we couldn't take it apart to fix it proper but I welded a rod to the piece that isn't directly connected to the shift lever. The rod sticks up through the floor and when it jams you just wiggled it and it was fine.
