It will run at times then die and won"t start back. It won"t start at all now. I"ve replaced the coil, points, distribitor cap, rotor button, condensor, resistor, and switch.I"m about to pull my hair out, please help.

I know this has nothing to do with fuel getting to the plugs, but I have fuel leaking all over my engine block! I traced it back to the gas tank just above the fuel bowl assembly. Leaking around the rivets which are on the tank.

I didn"t know how to start a topic, so please forgive me for jumping in on yours.

Do I have to buy a new tank... or is it possible to weld the rivets... or maybe solder around the rivets. Any advice would be appreciated.

So far I have drained the gas tank. Getting ready to pull it out and fill it with water to de-fume it in preparation for welding. But if anyone knows of an easier way....

Thank you,

Hey Rick 48

It sounds like ignition problem to me. Make sure that spark is not jumpimg from ignition wires or coil tower. You can check it in the dark. If you have points type distributor I would check the condenser. Also make sure the coil wire is good and check the coil and cap for corrosion as well.
TO check the condenser you need a digital volt meter. Set the meter in the ohms range, try all ranges, touch the lead and the case of the condeser, do it until you get the meter to read with different ohms ranges. Then revers the leads it should read again. The value is not important, but the condeser should act the same way when you revers the leads. It not you found your problem.

GUIDO.

Have you tried taking the sediment bowl off and checking to see if the screen is plugged? You may need to buy a new gasket or make one before you put it back together.

Let us know what you discover the problem is.

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor and see there's good suction there while someone makes an attempt to start the engine. Compression and intake manifold vacuum are all related. Make sure the intake manifold is tight
and the carburetor gasket isn't leaking. Hal

I see you like buying parts.Take all the plugs out,lay them on the cyl. head.Crank the engine and see if the spark jumps the electrode gap.If the spark runs up the insulator nose the engine wont start.Soaking the plugs in lacquer thinner will get rid of the carbon fouling.A peanut butter jar with a cover works fine.I keep a spare set soaking for the JD.

Do you have an air leak into the manifold or perhaps seriously leaky valves that are not allowing charge to be drawn into the cylinders?
A compession test would be useful.

Should it have a compression problem since the motor has been rebuilt about a year and a half ago? It probably don't have 20 hours on the motor. I've replaced the spark plugs twice. It had this problem before I had it rebuilt. Run time varies. Sometimes it will run for as long as I need it ,sometimes only a min. or two. It acts like it's starving for fuel.I don't like buying parts,I've just been trying to fix it by process of elimation. Please guys keep giving me Ideas. I'm going to try the gas cap idea when I get off from work today . Thanks guys.

Be sure you have spark. Do the oil thing to see if it is compression. Maybe there is an obstruction in the intake manifold or a leak. Just some thoughts.

As dumb as you may think this sounds, try a new set of spark plugs... Autolite 437's are GREAT for this application.

Take the plugs out and put some oil in the cylinders, spin the engine over lots, put the plugs back in and try to start it, it will smoke for a bit then, sounds like you dont have much compression and this will help, hope this helps.

possibly supposed to be a vented tank? On my Ford 860, I put on a new gas cap and it had a rubber ring around it. The tractor would quit running, and sometimes when starting, do the same thing yours is doing. I pulled the ring of so the tank could breath, and no more problems.

Try starting it by squirting starter fluid into the carb while cranking it. If it starts keep shooting a little fluid in to keep it running. If you can keep it running this way, you have a carb problem such as the needle valve stuck in the closed position.Take the line off going into the carb and see if gas flows out,if it does not there is an obstruction. If you have a drain plug in the bottom of the carb, take it out. The gas should run out freely.Put some water remover in the gas tank too.

I tried the starter fluid . She still wouldn't crank. It did crank earler today, when i put some fuel in it.Ran for about 5 min then died. She would not start back. Almost ran the battery down trying to restart. That's when she smelled flooded. But when I pulled the plug it was dry. Then I tried the starter fluid with no luck.

If it won't start on starting fluid you probably have an electrical or timing problem.Start first with cleaning all the plugs, check the spark plug wires for the correct firing order etc.

Compression?

You can have all the spark and fuel in the world, but if it doesn't have adedquate wind, she won't run.

Sounds like you did everything on the ignition side. Not getting adequate fuel. Problem is between the fuel tank cap and the intake manifold. Filter-flow-carb.
