This one may or may not be different,or possibly not even politically correct,but the one tractor that we've owned to date that caused us the most finantial grief was a 1085 massey we once owned.Not saying that 1085's weren't on average a good tractor,but we were sure glad to see ours rolling away on that float truck for the last time.Not intended to get anyone upset,just looking for comments on personal experiences.

We used to have a 4610,those tractors in that series anyways were real work horses.pd

I didn't own it, but I farmed with it. Back in the '80's, dad bought a Case 1030. What a P.O.S.! Cracked a head one year. The next year it spun bearings and had another cracked head (yes, it was well maintained and the oil was changed per the manual). The Case didn't want to start in cold weather. It had a cab, but no heat or air. It was louder inside the cab than outside, so we used those shooting earmuffs anytime we went to the field, provided it was warm outside and it wasn't in the shop. Yep, I hated that tractor.

Some wag on this forum once noted that N Fords were good for going out to the mailbox- as long as you didn't have very much mail. Actually, my dad ran a 40 cow dairy for 12 years with only an 8N- and I had one for awhile about 35 years ago- and they did do their share of work.

Without a doubt it was a 1010 JD.Durn thing had the Prestolite starter and would kick out when the engine tried to start.Would spend1/2 the day trying to get the thing started!Next was a B71 Kubota,JUNK

MF 130- a dark day in MF history. Had one for a little while, and it was as bad as the 135 is good- hard to start, smoked like Edward R. Murrow until it warmed up, complicated hydraulics (never worked right anyhow, so there was really no need to figure them out), etc. Finally offed that lemon at a consignment sale- I overheard the buyer explaining the finer points to his bride afterward, when he came across the serial tag- "Made in &*%@ France? Oh, *%^$@!

The worst tractor i've ever had the displeasure of owning was an Allis 7060. It spent so much time in the shop, some of the customers thought it was a demonstrator

That's a draw. I had a John Deere 730 diesel and a Farmall 706 diesel that both made me want to put a gun in my mouth. Those 730s were pretty to look at,but to farm with,what a joke.

Well guys have not had a lemon farm tractor if used and maintained as should be. BUT have had a Yardman lawnmower JUNK. New holland and minneapolis moline sickle mowers JUNK. John deere pinwheel hay rake not very happy with. Oliver oc3 and hg crawlers left a lot to be desired too!

My neighbor and fellow fireman had a 1967 Deere 2510 Diesel with a Deere loader that he was always pouring money into. The Syncro Range tranny needed shop work every few years, and also over the time it needed a couple of engine rebuilds, injector pump, a couple of clutches, etc. Each visit to the shop was never less than 3 grand, sometimes a lot more. I guess the tractor liked the dealer's shop better than it's home barn, maybe the heat was better. I wanted to buy the tractor a few years ago, not knowing its full history and he wouldnt sell it to me for those reasons. Most of the time when you don't want to part with a tractor it is because it is so good, but this is the first time I heard of one that the owner wouldnt part with because it was so bad. He still has it and uses it once in a while to brush hog or move a rock or two. It is an irony as there are many Deere 2510's in my area and people hang on to them because they like them so much. Oh well, there is a lemon in every barrel, I guess.

We had one of those worthless JD 730 Ds.
All smoke and noise, could never get the stupid pony motor to start, crank bent by the flywheel.
Junk.
Our old Cockshutt 50 wasn't so hot either. Bored over so big we had to put an extra battery on it to get the starter to even think about turing it over. And it still wouldn't over half the time. The hyds were shot and would dump 2.5 gal of fluid into the rear end just as quick as you could pull the lever to raise the hay head. Couldn't get it in gear every once in a while.
And the governer was not very snappy.

Most of the problem was it was an old worn out tractor. The rest of the problem was it was an old out-of-date tractor.

If it ran an hour solid without breaking down, that was a miracle.

The one that burnt us the most was an Oliver 1755 diesel w/ a loader. It seemed to like sitting in the shop a whole bunch.

Wouldn't start in the winter so dad had the top end rebuilt to up the ocmpression. Started great for another 2 years then started getting harder to start again. Lost the clutch while chopping corn, the brakes blew the seals while plowing, a few years later while using it to load the spreader, the transmission locked up and had to be replaced with one form an 1855. I think it got a new shift fork right before that too. The next year the engine gave up.

Now we've got an 1855 that's a great runner, and the 17 is still behind the barn and I'm gonna fix it one of these years. Dad thinks I'm crazy and part of me says the same thing, but if I fix it right I hope the he11 it runs a little bit longer. The thing never did want to restart when hot either.... Had to just walk away and come back after an hour....

I have not had a bad one yet that I haven"t straighted out, but my great grandpa had one that he traded in after a few months. It was a 1920 something Fordson. They said they had to work on it more hours than they ran it. He got a IH 10-20 and then a F-20 when they came out and the F-20 was still running on the farm till 1966 when he sold it. He also had a couple Ms and a 300 and didn"t have too much trouble with them outside of the usual wear.

Have to agree with Bill about the Ford 6000 we had with the jerk o matic trans we called it that was when and if you could get it to start and run. There were no tears shed when that one got traded off lol.

I didn't see it mentioned below but the Ford 6000 Commander would have to be right up there. Never owned one but knew some who did. Select-O-Speed was the culprit. Ford admitted it and thought they had fixed the problems and offered new tractors to farmers who had bought them. The farmers were happy about that until they found out the new ones wern't any better. You see one for sale occasionally. Never have many hours on them and most look quite good. That's because they spent so little time running.

not mine but a guy i worked for had a massey 2745 hyd leaks all over if he needed me all he had to do was follow the oil trail more fuel system trouble than you could beat with a stick. i hated driving the d thing as i was afarid of what would break on it next. belive me i drove that thing like it was baby buggy full of babies.

Which one cost us the most in repairs? Ford 3930, absolutely, bar none. It's also done more work for it's size than anything else here and gets used like a dozer at least half the time....
Which did I hate the most and love to see leave? Bel-A-Rus; 520A. The only thing that spoiled that day was that the Ford 5610 towed it on the float and went with it. 4x4 got the both of them... Wish I knew where the 5610 ended up....

Is your cup half empty or half full? Something to think about is how many of those two cylinders did you see with power train problems? What I'd like to point out is that they were built stout for their horse power rating because of the torque they hat at low RPM.

Not so much a tractor, but a pain nonetheless. 1990s Scotts/Murray riding mower. Should have been a real nice mower, 18 hp briggs twin, 46" cut, Hydrostatic transmission, bells and whistles.

The front tire seemed to always go flat. The battery was always dead. The safety features and switches always seemed to be causing problems. Went through belts like crazy.

Yet somehow we still have it.

Allis 7045! Awful tight cab and it had to have either to start for the first time of the day regardless of temp. Forever having tranny problems and not sure if it was just ours or all of them but when you stepped on the "clutch" all the way it was like throwing it into park! Some sorta tranny brake I think but wow did that thing cause some busted shins. Second worse were the two Oliver 2255's. Just about as worthless. Only good thing was the 3150 and 3208 Cat's. Always had trouble with the hydraulics or the over/under or steering or hydraulics. If it wasn't the hydraulics it was the rest of the hydraulics. Both of them so I assume it was a common problem. Nice tractor other than those hydraulics!

No one is the worst either. But if I have to pick one its the one that when you really need it for a job it does not want to start and it takes you half the day to get it running and by then you have wasted so much time its dark out and the job still needs to be done yesterday

We've never really had a bad tractor. Al the MM's start and do their job. But 3years ago me and my grandpa rebuilt a ZTU from a pile of junk to better than new and it it the dumb tractor of them all it starts and runs real good WHEN it wants to. Replaces the plugs wires although they were new different starter had the mag rebuilt so now I'm a gonna put a distributor on it. i know it ain't original but so long as it runs.

The worst we ever had was an Oliver 70 my father bought. It ran beautifully--when you could get it started.

My dad insisted on it being the tractor he would put on a belt driven feed grinder. Many a time, particularly in the winter, we'd belt it to a VAC Case that ALWAYS started, with a twist in the belt, just to start the Oliver before we belted it to the grinder.

If you ever killed the engine in the field, you might as well walk to a shade tree and take a nap for an hour, then go back. By then there was a chance it might start again.

I've talked to dozens of IH574 owners who swear their's was a great tractor, but the one I had was a demon spawn. Hydraulic troubles, steering linkage wore out too quick. Electric problems from day one. shift linkage issues. Injector pump wouldn't quit leaking no matter what I did. It had a nice seat though.

Worst luck I had with a tractor was a 1070 Case that I bought new. It started with a nut that cracked and came off a transmission shaft at 500 hours. Because of the missing nut things got loose down there and gears started getting intimate with each other and the result was filings in the oil. This started a chain of failed parts that finally made me give up and trade it off at 1800 HRS. A lot of people have had good luck with 1070's. I just wasn't one of them. Jim

Maybe I bought your old 1070? Had the same experiences. The rear differential went out twice, cracked a sleeve, and broke a lift arm that punctured the right rear tire. Had a cab with air conditioning that only worked occassionally.
This tractor probably prompted my first farm machinery sale. Heard the tractor had more problems with the next owner.

Yep - we had a Case 1570 - Dad bought it because it was rated at close to the same HP as his JD 6030...

It wasn't even close - and we had a terrible time with parts all over it not hanging together...

But it always started super easy!

once my dad had this Case 630. he got a good deal on a piece of crap. we could run it for like 5 months and then had to put rod and main bearings in it. finally sold it to someone who was gonna pull with it. i think he fixed it a total of 6 times. Lets see. now i have this old 4020 It was an LP but the LP engine kept giving me trouble so i sold the LP engine to a guy from the area with all the LP tin and bought a diesel engine and all the tin and the fuel tank and all. granted the LP had a turbo on it but still gave me troubles after i took the turbo off. now that i got a different engin in it and put the turbo off the LP on teh Diesel, it runs just as smooth as can be and don't give me any guff.

1586 ih, bought it used, engine quit three weeks later. Rebuilt engine, ran it 3 years and entire rear end, hydraulics, clutch, ta, and brakes had to be replaced. A/c never would cool. Paid $9000.00 for it, spent twice that much on it and was tickled to get rid of it for $7000.00, all in 6 years time.

worst Owned was a massey 240. terrible little tractor. god awful hydraulics setup and bad gear pattern for road use. Worst to operate but luckily not own was a ford 4000 selectospeed.

alright, there appers to be an unintended tractor war here. Or just alot of venting and bragging. This will probabally last a few days, so i am kind of glad i will be away from a computor. Seriously guys, all tractors have good points and bad ones. This is going to get real spicy here, i can feel it comin' allready. Some People are real easily POed over this topic. Lets just agree that Tonkas are the best tractors ever made and Hoyt-Clagwells are the worst tractors ever made and leave it at that.

There's no tractor war going on. People are just telling of their experience with tractors they've had. Sometimes a lemon comes out of the factory for an otherwise good tractor. A lot of the time it isn't the tractors fault but the operators and/or maintenance person. Dave

I never owned but my Dad did, it was an 830 Case-O-Matic. Tractor never ran right, kept cracking a head. We finally traded it for a 930, it was a much better tractor as was our 730.

It was a horse, all it did was eat and bust up the barn and fences. didnt mater if you worked it or not. after that any tractor was good. even junk it was still worth 50.00 bucks a ton. there are good and bad in all.

The worst tractor I have ever owned was a John Deere 730 Diesel. It was all smoke and noise. When we traded it for a new 3020 diesel I thought I had gone to heaven.

Mine was a 930 CK case. Never could get it to run right. propane switch to a gas. Think that was the problem. Eddie

a John Deere "M" my dad had one when I was a kid and sold it when I was a teenager--- I saw one at an auction and had to have it-- that thing was a HUGE pile of junk ---never so glad to get rid of a tractor in my life

180 Massey Dad bought, first pass across the field the draw bar assy. fell off. Then the hyd quit, then the hyd quit,then the hyd quit had it 2 years and used it about 3 hr. The next guy that bought it ran it 10yr with no trouble.
