Ok, so this is OT, but I'm hoping someone on this board has their nose in old snowmobiles too. We're cleaning up grandma's estate and she has a Mercury 25 hp snowmobile w/ good paint and a two person matching Mercury pull behind sled. There was an ad in the local newspaper with someone looking for old snowmobiles. We called him and his eyes lit up when he saw the sled. He offered $100.

He's called back about 5 times now and upped the offer to $200. I'm guessing the sled must be worth something. Anyone know what the combo is worth?

There's a couple good websites out there dedicated to vintage sleds. www.vsca.com and www.vintagesleds.com Might want to check those out, see if you get any info.

And yeah, like others said, I think eBay may be your best bet.

I agree with Ron, Clean it up just a little bit showing the good paint and put it on Ebay. Tell the guy that you put it on ebay and that will give you people to bid against one another. You can always put a reserve on it if you want to.

Word it just like you did here saying it came from the estate and that you haven't tried to start it.

His offer is low but you did not say condition and on a sled thats critical. The tow sled is worth that. $4-500 is better but you may have to wait for a buyer. Now running and good condition $1000!!

Like mentioned earlier, it is really only worth something to a collector and the value is whatever someone is willing to pay. The pull sled adds some value, they are fairly rare, but again demand for them is low. I have 5 vintage Scorpion snowmobiles, the restored ones are worth (to a collector) about $600 each.

The real question is: what is it worth to you? If you aren't trying to squeeze every penny out of the sled and this guy is offering you a $200, it might be worth it to sell it to him. If you got the impression he was just going to resell the if, you might want to ask for more. Ebay is a great tool, but for sleds the shipping costs often hamper the price.

Good luck.

I have accidentally become a Massey Ferguson Snowmobile collector. I have 6 now and a grainary full of parts. I have been asked to look at old snowmobiles in people's barns and make offers. To be honest an old snowmobile that has been sitting for years just isn't worth a whole lot. The tracks crack, the carbs are gummed and need rebuilt, often points are corroded, and coils go dead from sitting in damp storage. Gas in tanks has soured, plastic lines dry out and crack and break. Tanks must be removed, drained and cleaned. Parts are most often obsolete. It can take several days of work and diagnostics to get one running. Sometimes you get one running by robbing parts from another..and when you are all done you still have an old snowmobile. The $200 offer is not out of line. I bought one at an auction for $25, have had two given to me. Where I live there are a lot of old snowmobiles sitting in barns. I've seen running snowmobiles sell for $75...I hope this gives you an idea, not trying to devalue what you have but if you advertised the machine there may be no takers.

It's probably only worth something to a collector. Maybe you could call the person back who's interested and tell him you have a couple other people interested. He might up his offer even more. Maybe you could get $400 or $500 for the combo. Dave
