Have the same problem I posted a couple weeks ago - been putting it off by using the old minivan that we kept for my son - buy Toyota.

Her is the story in short -

My 2001 7.3L Powerstroke has been intermittently taking a long time to start. This morning, after sitting for a week she won’t start at all - previously, she would start if I had it plugged into the block heater long enough.

When it is having a hard time starting, I can hear a rattling noise that sounds like it may be a solenoid that is not fully engaging. The rattling appears to be comming from the waste gate solenoid. Does this open the waste gate or close it? Could this be the cause of the hard starts?

I have a Ford repair manual on CD but it does not seem to have any info on the turbo system.

Note, I have not had the batteries checked - but the batteries are less than 2 years old and she turns fast and long when I am trying to start it. I am pretty sure the batteries are fine.

Thanks.,

batteries; or cranking related. that engine can sound like its cranking fast enough--but computer has to read a certain crank speed before it will fire.

Doesnt matter how old the batteries are, I know. I just replaced 2 this morning.Same issues.Same truck! It turns over just fine, but not enough juice to fire it off. The clicking you are hearing is the relays under the dash clicking because there isnt enough power to make then close correctly. Take them OUT and go have them tested. Leaving them in and connected will almost always show they are good when they arent! While Im sure its your batteries, if it isnt then please let mne know what it was.

John, you hit the nail on the head.

I have not had them checked yet but ...

Under no load the batteries put out about 12.5 volts. When cranking the starter they drop to about 9.5 give or take. I have been told he electical system in the truck needs about 10.4 volts for to work properly on start-up.

Also, when I jumped the truck with my mini-van, it started fairly well.

Thanks.

Sounds like the Glow plug relay by the fuel filter cover is defective.

I want to know about your fuel. Could there be fuel filters that need to be changed or drained of water? It sounds like you have enough cranking amps to start it. If you have a turbo problem, I would think it would be at high RPM's and when under Load rather than at start up. I got surprised with a tractor last week. I had put new fuel filters on it about three weeks ago and the tractor didn't really start like it should. I opened the drains on the bottom of the filters and I couldn't believe how much water came out and sediment . I was sure that I had drained all the dirt and water when i changed the filters..obviously not.I think if you can get it running you will know if the turbo is working as soon as you take it for a spin..good luck

Mike,

I changed the fuel filter a few months ago, and checked for water when this first started a few weeks ago. As my reply above says, it is the batteries after all.

I believe they have pretty well answered why it won't start. Not that it matters accept that you did ask about the waste gate selenoid , it opens the door to dump exhaust pressure out the exhaust when pressure in the intake manifold reaches a predetermined pressure so the engine won't see an overboost condition. If it sees overboost the engine's computer will shut off fuel until boost falls.
