We have a 240 IH. The cluch and all its parts were
replaced with new. Now you can push the cluch in and see it come off the disc. We have done this both running and not. The problem is that when the cluch is pushed in she will start to slow down and stop rolling but with in a short time off we go again with the cluch still on the floor. Sometimes you can push the cluch in and it will not make any change in the pulling at all, so off we go. We have split her two time to look at all the parts and start over but no luck. Please Help. Thanks!

The problem is fixed. After we pulled, pushed, tugged and towed, working the clutch extra hard, she finally broke free. Now she runs like a new one. Thankyou for all of your input. The problem was the glazing on the fly wheel and the new clutch disk that grabbed onto it and would not let go. Thankyou "Yesterday's Tractor" for parts that just "won't let go". I will use them again.

ding ding ding.... there's an obvious problem. Your disk is sticking to the flywheel.

This is caused by greasy deposits on the tranny input shaft and/or twisted, messed up splines. This usually occurs after you put in a new clutch, try opening the access hole and spraying wd-40 or some kind of silicone oil on the splines at the clutch disk.

Worked for me on a few Farmall cubs, they had the exact SAMMMMM MMMMMEEEEE EEEEE problem

Had a neighbor who had 8N Ford to act that way. He replaced clutch and pressure plate and throwout bearing. Still same problem. Found the little lever like thing on the rnd of the rod that went through the housing was split and just sometimed turned the rod allowing the clutch to release. I welded the little lever thing and seems to work ok.

Is this a hydraulic clutch? What you're describing is classic symptoms of a leaky cylinder on a hydraulic clutch.

If it's a mechanical linkage, ignore this post.

Well the others have made good points. Bent clutch disk, pilot bearing bad/dragging, warped pressure plate as in you tighten the bolts one at a time instead of going round and round, bent input shaft, throw out bearing hanging up, bad or missing pilot bearing letting the input shaft to more side ways. Warped flywheel/uneven surface on the flywheel. Any one or a combo of can cause your problem

Sounds like something is changing from time to time. Maybe the "throw out" bearing fork is slipping on the shaft. WaltMo

On an A one time I bought a new clutch disk, but not a new pressure plate - they didn't match up and when I started the tractor I had no release from it...

Disk in backwards, pilot bearing froze up, disk catching on the splines, are what come to mind...

sounds like a bent clutch disc or put in backwards.

When you slid it together, did it go easy?Forcing it can bend disc and cause drag. Also check for worn splines on headshaft can cause the disc not to slide and can cause drag ,too.

that was happening with my oliver super 55.you just tie the draw bar to another tractor's draw bar on the bigger tractor put the tranny in 1st gear and put the 240's tranny in the highest gear its got. the bigger tractor can cruise in 1st then when the 240's being pulled you can s l o w l y let out the clutch . you will hear the clutch start to slip keep doing that until its fixed. what that does it breaks the glaze like when honing a cylinder wall . it should work.
