This time of year, whenever I get out of my 85 Ford pickup,I get one heck of a static shock. I park it in a building with a dirt floor and have been for so many years that there are pretty good indentations,so it always stops in the same place. Today,I drove a steel round electric fence post in the ground where it will stop right up against it to ground it. Think it'll help or am I just gonna have a rust spot on my big, pretty chrome bumper?

Probably got seat covers? Nylon or other synthetics? Synthetic clothes? All a problem. Do as others have said - discharge the electrostatic to the vehicle, not to the ground - or get natural-fibre clothes/seat covers. End of problem.

Get rid of the nylon underpants my wife did and she's a lot happier these days.

Shoot all you need is a small chain. Hook it to your truck some place so it is on the ground. It will stop that problem. Years ago they did that on tanker trucks so they didn't have that problem.

the problem is your nylon or rayon clothing on the plastic seats when you slide out charge you up then you tuch the door and bang or zap you are discharged. grab the door first and hold on till you are off the seat. "try it you will like it".

the thing is all you have to do is keep one hand on the vehicle until you touch the ground no need for the engineers letter for this one or a rust spot on the bumper make sure the part you are touching is metal.I just keep my hand on the door until my left foot is perminatley on the ground if you lift it before your right foot is down you will recharge the static Roy

I do keep one hand on the top of the door. Honest to God,the spark will jump right off the side of my finger anyway. I drove it to town for breakfast this morning, heard it hit the post when I pulled in and no shock. Course I didn't have a whole lot of extra clothes on with the temp being up for a change. And...one time doesn't prove a thing. I'm not about to change my wardrobe. I'll let you know in a few weeks if it helps or not.

I would put that kind of thinking to better use :-D

seriously, that sounds like a good idea. I think it would work. I would have put a thick copper wire on the axle about 1 or so feet, to just dangle and ground it. Would work in more then just your garage. Let us know if it works, id kinda like to know :-)

Lance...if you had a copper wire(or copper anything) "dangling" from the vehicle so that it touched ground....how many miles do you think that'd last before it wore to the point that it didnt touch ground?

Although, I do applaud your thinking. I seem to remember propane or gas trucks that used to have a length of chain that drug on the ground for the same purpose.

Myself, unless the place I parked the truck was right next to where I store my excess rocket fuel, hydrogen, gunpowder, and TNT(those are all stored safely away from the vehicles, in a cardboard shack right behind the trash burning barrel), I'd just take the occasional shock and not worry about it.

"Static ground strap",available from auto supply stores..similar to a rubber bungee strap but conductive..hands beneath vehicle, common on mobile welding rigs, vehicles w/ham or business 2way radio, gas trucks etc.

definitely need something grounding on a welding truck. The ac/dc engine we used on a 3/4 ton a long while ago had the tendency to zap everything (including us) when it was damp and/or rainy outside. We don't know why, perhaps because the welder had bypassing trickle charges (no rubber isolation mounts).

We dropped a piece of chain bolted to the utility bed opposite the gas tank. Of course, we forgot about it often, so new chain was frequent :)

Why don"t you put little wheel stoppers where you want the front tires to stop?
