I have had to do that on a tractor before, I dragged it ti the barn, put the salamander to the back, put a piece of sheet metal by the front to deflect the heta back ,, a few hours later it was good to go,, to change the fluid,, I would see see why the coals wouldnt work either but never did that route,, good luck,,, pat ,,,

also from ny by norwich, played in the snow with my 250 with the plow on it,, my days of back blading are done,, nice and warm, with teh radio playing ,,,,

My Oliver 70 did that a few years ago. Sat in front of the feed grinder, went to move it and it wouldn't go. I skidded it in to the shop, pulled the drain plug and sat the salamander behind it for a few hours.

We use a magnetic heater on the transmission of our 165 in the winter to warm up the hydraulic oil- it's a common reservoir w/ the loader and it's really slow til it warms up. Then it's just slowish.

On a jd 60 at 15 below froze solid I slid a 5 gallon metal bucket about 1/2 full of charcoal brickets under it, thawed it out enough to get it loaded.

To help get the 2N Ford started I've put the live coals from the woodstove in a shallow bucket and put'em under the oil pan with a blanket over the hood. Didn't own a salamander then.

What about one of those dipstick heaters? or maybe even drain some of the fluid out and heating it in a boiler then putting it back in. That should get you rolling until you can change the fluid and get all of the water out.

I have used the hog pan and charcoal method with a blue tarp over it, works fine.

Usea a knipco heater aimed at the differential and oil tank for loader and plugged in a lower radiator hose heater for the tractor engine. Worked good.
