I know this is way OT, but I know you guys will have an answer since I cant find one anywhere else. I have an oil burner in the basment of our ranch style house. I would like to add a wood/coal stove. Can I run both the stove and the oil burner on the same flue? My dad said he did it for years with no problems, but a local stove shop says it cant be done. Input? Or any websites that I could search to find out? Thanks

In Mich I have seen lots of chimneys using furnace and hot water heater on a Y pipe. Didn/t look good to me, but guess it must be code, now.

He probably did and got away with it.

Once again sure it can

Really it probably can be done like dad did, "if" the chimney is big enough and has enough draw. But is it a code violation? Most likely. Is it a good idea? Certainly not! Will the insurance company like you after you try it and gas everyone? Call them and find out.

When I was a kid we had an oil burning water heater and wood burning stove in the basement and an oil burner and cook stove upstairs, all on the same clay tile lined chimney. We never had any problems. I still live in this same house and we use the same chimney, but we use gas heaters now. NO MORE SOOT! Have you considered replacing the oil burner with a gas one? When we changed over to gas the house was cleaner. Stay warm. Jim

This is not allowed, due to code's and insurance regulations. Although it (would, could, and will work)One problem is the chimney might not be large enough for both heating systems to be operating at the same time. The metal chimney's that are manufactured today are safe and really not that expensive to purchase, CSA or UL, ULC approved. Might just as well make it safe and peace of mind. Being a former Fire Chief, if these are installed according to code you should not have any problems. Cheers, Murray

I have a high eff. propane and a wood stove, and don't have any problems. I only rent the house and thats the way the landlord used it when he lived here. I've been here 6 years. My insurance man didn't say anything either. chris

Seems to me FARRVIEW is on the right track. The oil burner's exhaust is much cooler and if the flue is over-sized the gases will condense, accumulate and freeze causing premature flue failure. Back in the day, this was acceptable because the old oil burner sent as much heat up the chimney as a wood fire (well almost!)

Does that apply to metal chimneys only, ours was a poured liner back in the 80's, pretty substanial thing?

With the furnace in the basement, and 2 tall floors plus the attic to go through, the metal chimneys are a bit much to try to deal with running through the house.

Wouldn't want to turn a pair of 90s and run up the side of the house, that is a _long_ way up there too to let the pipe cool..... :)

Not all situations are cookie-cutter, some are difficult to deal with.

It was allowed just fine in the early 1970's. Worked fine.

It is no longer to code in the 2000's.

I'd be concerned in a super tight efficiency house with little air turnover.

In a leaky old farmhouse, only the local code & your insurance co would be the problems.

The reason they say not to run both units in the same flue has to do with the amount of moisture in the exhaust of the oil furnace mixing with the smoke from the wood stove. Creates lots more creosote which could lead to a chimney fire.
Its been done without problems by many folks but maybe they were just lucky.

Check with both appliances that you want to hook up. I am sure that you CANT put both on one flue. I had thought about doing the same thing, corn stove and wood stove on the same 6" flue. Both manuals to each say NO. I am sure that it would work ONLY if ran one at a time and had the proper up draft. (no horizontal pipe) Also your Home insurance comp. would likely not insure it.

check your local building codes. prolly not allowed. and your homeowners insurance will have a fit. run a separate chimney.
