My power steering is not working. Sometimes the steering wheel will turn without moving the tires and sometimes it will not turn at all. Any suggestions on possible solutions to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!third party image

Hmm..
You wont like this but sounds like you have found one with a bad steering motor. I have not had one apart, but there are bearings in the steering colum that can cause the wheel to not turn, the other is the steering motor is slipping. The 1600 I believe has a saginaw steering motor ( hard to find parts for ) but can be replaced with a charlynn motor ( gets expensive with all the fittings and adaptors needed ). Dont have their number, but miabach's (sp??) in Ohio is an excellent resource.

Good luck.

I know where you can get the best info possible from great people. Go to olivertractor.com and ask Larry Harsins he can help also his number is on there if you would like to talk with him. Alot of times he even has parts that people need he has been invaluable to me.

I did check three point and hydro. they seem to work fine. I just purchased the tractor last week at auction.I have little experience with olivers, first one. Your ideas are great and I will investigate your ideas as sone as I can. May be a long winters project ,not much time after work and no lights in shop.

I'm not an expert by any means, so this is worth what you are paying for it. Do 3pt and remote cylinders work and still won't steer? Might be flow divider on side of hyd unit or bad hyd pump if nothing works. Have you jacked up the front wheels to see if they turn with no weight? I have had the seals go bad in the steering unit under the radiator and let oil go by instead of turning wheels. Could be the steering motor under the dash, not sure how you check that. Check out these ideas and then post results on Oliver board, J Shwiebert? I know I spelled it wrong, sorry John, and many others are usually there and knows these tractors inside and out, but you have to give him more info to go by if you want an answer. It's like going to the dentist with a tooth ache. He says which tooth and you say I don't know it just hurts. You have a problem that can be fixed, but you need to give a complete discription of the problem and what you have checked to narrow it down a little. Not trying to be a smart a--, just take the time to put a little effort into it and then you can get much more help. Chris

I'm a little disappointed. You're an Oliver guy, aren't you? I'm pretty sure you've replied to some of my 1600 questions in the past on this forum. I guess I don't believe everyone should be shooed off to the "proper" forum all the time. I looked and see that he never even bothered going there. I have posted things there with no or little response and then got the response I needed here. Sure hope it's not a "green thing" like the other guys. Anyway I hope he at least did a search and found out that his hydramotor may need rebuild or replace along with the other suggestions J.Schwiebert and several others had.

End of rant,
ll

I know when I'm in over my head and I'm not going to try to give advice when I don't have any. Guys like J and others on the Oliver forum can give better advice than I can on this one. If the symptoms were different,I might have some advice.
