Working with buddy of mine to have Tractor Club plow down 150 acres total (various sized fields) and then replant. Land has been row cropped in the past and is now just overgrown.

Event is scheduled for last wx in Jan. 2008. What recommendations, lessons learned, etc. have you got to offer. How 'bout ya Nebraska Cowman?

I am thinking everyone brings covered dish and BBQ some hog or go simple with some bratwurst and cold ones when done.

Plowing would be all tractors move in unison thru each field seperately until done.

Your thoughts?

Don't have the staging area or grilling area near the farmyard. At our last plow bee we had 21 tractors and plows and about 150 people half of which I did not know. All those people wondering around yard and next day found some of my stuff missing. Have them load, unload, BBQ park on back road away from farm yard. I thought all these people were good farm people but sure found out there are bad in every crowd.

Shep, just wanted to give credit where it"s due; that is an excellent photo. Shooting hobby related pix and participating in plowing bee"s here in central MI are among my favorite pastimes. The two go great together, but the camera is a little cheaper to run than the John Deere.

Shep;
One suggestion is to devide the plow bottom sizes. Keep the 18's and 20's together, the 16's seperate from 14's and so on. Some mixing is alright, but a 12 inch plow following a 18 inch plow is going to leave the surface mighty uneven.
Have someone who is experienced at the start of the plowing to help adjust plows and set depth and leveling.
Our club has a fuel distributor who brings his trucks in and furnishes fuel at his discounted price and receives recognition from the club and free membership.

Hi ShepFL. , Let us know the date. Can we bring our tractor & plow? LOL I have a 1935 "A" Deere I grew up on. Started driving at 10. Retired now!!! I have a Deere #52 2-14 plow. A group of us have plowed every year for the last 5 plus years. Our advice is lay off lands tell people to bring a plow that is SHINED up and HITCH set to match the tractor. Keep the slower older tractors on one land & the racers on another. Tell them if they need help to set their plow people can help. Around 7-8 in deep is about right for the old plows.If your field is trashy you will need to disc & hope you can get a little rain. If dry plow the grass & weed standing. Do not mow or chop.It will just float & plug up the plows. Earl In Illinois

Super 99 has some good suggestions. Either a loader tractor or a all terain forklift. Aside from repairs you will need something like this to help guys load up to go home when done.

Eight of us had our first plowday last April. We invited the local newspaper photographer (grew up on a farm) and we ended up on the first page of our weekly newspaper (city of 9000). Even though the field was not on a main road, at one point I counted 20 cars stopped. Some were families with kids. Most fun scene was 3 little boys had taken off their shoes and were running barefoot thru the plowed soil...kids nowadays never get to feel that on their toes! After that picture hit the paper, I had 3 farmers contact me asking to join in next yr. We might have a food tent next yr, maybe have some families help out or maybe a service club can help and keep the profits. We also might put an announcement in the paper ahead of time. Need a loader tractor for getting plows off trailers and for troubles. Sure was a fun day.

Nice photo. Wish I could be there. We have several plow days and my best advice is to turn them loose and let 'em rip! Have fun!. If you have multiple locations, spread your tractors out among them; don't get too many in one field. How about posting some pics for us when you have the plow day?

Had to think about this a little before giving my opinion. Sounds like you plan to plow all 150 acres in 1 day? Must have lots of tractors and plows coming, I'd think the farmer could at least buy the fuel.Depending on the age variation of the tractors, I think that I'd start the newer, larger rigs on the far side of the field and the older smaller ones closer to the pickups ( breakdowns, adjustments, etc ).
Older plows aren't made to plow that deep, they could all be set to plow about 6" and let the big boys try to bury theirs without causing problems for the older rigs. The few I've been to, they take a rig like you have in picture and try to plow 9" to 12" deep and they just weren't made to do that. If I were hosting it, I think I would lay all the lands out before hand so when it gets crowded or someone is having problems they can split up and all keep going. Have to admit, all the tractors plowing on 1 land would be an awesome picture. I would think it would be a good idea to have someones service truck there with welder, bolts, air compressor, and maybe a loader. Was at one when a bolt broke and the land wheel went under and backwards. Had 5 guys trying to pick plow up high enough to roll it back into proper position and put new bolt in. Would have been nice to had a loader to pick it up. OH ya, this is a biggie, Tell them to get some of the rust off the bottoms before they show up. Seen guys show up with a plow that has set for 20 years and try to plow wet soil and wonder why it won't scour. Better have some scrapers for those that don't. Some guys have never plowed before and are shy about asking questions, might have someone that knows what they are doing help them set and adjust their plows. That's all I can think of for now, see what everybody else has to say. Chris

I got a plow like that but mine don't have the tail wheel does a real nice job of turning the soil over but takes all day. My buddy has a 5 bottom behind his IH 1066 now that's the way to go.
