i bought a dodge with the 5.9 cummins with an auto tranny from a friend who owned it since new and got an honest 30 to 35 mph with it, i know this, he isnt a bullcrapper or anything. the truck sat for about 2 years and i bought the truck and took off the pickup bed and put on a flatbed on it. i have only been getting about 20 mpg with it and i am very light on the throttle. is there any stuff to check that could be causeing the worst milage, the flatbed is not excessively heavy and the headboard is not much bigger than the cab so no exxesive wind resistance. is the tranny a lockup converter? how would i tell if it is and if its working, i dont feel it go into lockup but maybe it should and isnt?

Got a friend claims 32mpg on Lincoln with 4.6.V8 Don't believe him either.

Sheeesh, I read most of your responses and I just don't understand.

Markct wrote his friend "got an honest 30 to 35 mph". Now I can understand the doubt you guys have that a Dodge will maintain that kinda consistent speed but gee it's not a Ford.

Saying he got 35 mpg out of that truck he is definately a bullcrapper. Its like a redneck saying he dont like venison. 20 to 22 would be about right.

An "honest 34 MPG" is an oxy-moron. It never happened - and defies the laws of physics.
Trucks with 5.9s and standard trans setups - if geared well usually get 19-22 MPG on the highway. Automatics without OD around 17-18 MPG.
My neighbor has an 89 he's had since new with auto and it gets a consistent 16.5 in this hilly area. My 92 with a five-speed manual and 3.50 axles gets up to 21 MPG, but 19 MPG highway is the usual average.

Your friend might be honest but also has wishful thinking and poor math skills. I know lots of honest people who post rediculous fuel mileage claims - especaily with diesels. I've had many opportunities to check, and when I did, none came close.

Like everybody else has already said..if your getting 20 with an auto,your in good shape..my 1990 5 speed averaged 21..I got 23 out of one tank,but I was driving it real easy just to see what I could get out of it.. your buddy was just wrong

20 mpg is good. If your friend calculated 30-35 mpg, he needs to study his math again.

I used to get 28-32mpg in an old car. 85 Buick Century, 4-cyl, 2.5L, 4tech engine. Book said the engine was rated for 92hp. Much lighter vehicle of course. Oh, and I changed the air filter monthly. But when I eventually replaced the oxygen sensor because the "Service Engine Soon" light kept coming on, the old one was burned white. Mileage dropped immediately to about 24mpg with the new O2 sensor. Did I also mention that I removed the air conditioner compressor hose and only used the heater fan in the winter?

I'd still be driving that car, except I dinged up the front end and blew a brake hose and never could bleed the brakes well because a bleeder was stuck and broke off. I miss that car-even though I still have it.

I re-read the post. His friend isn't a bullcrapper. I'd be more leary that the truck only went 30-35 "MPH"! It would probably get better milage going that slow though. Dave

For your information a 89 had a non-lockup A727 three speed auto with a 3.07 ratio Dana rear axle. I don't believe it would ever get near 30 mpg. either. My 92 with the four speed OD auto tranny and 3.54 rear gears gets around 20 empty local driving.

I'm curious, at what speed was you friend getting that kind of mileage? I know slowing well below the speed limit, like maybe 35-45 mph will get the mileage up.

I think a lot of that engine, but it won't get 35 miles to any gallon, no matter how many ways you skin the cat... and certainly not in front of that automatic.
The 20 you're getting is hard enough to believe, but good if you're getting it. Don't complain.
22-24 is generally the best I've heard of from the trucks with 5 speeds, for what it's worth. That's from a guy that tracks his mileage very carefully.

When my 97 Dodge was new, it was getting 25 MPG running emty, I got suspect as to the accuracy of the odometer, It was 10 percent fast. It is dead accurate now, it will get a true 23 MPG . Imagine if Chrysler set all their of the odometers 10 percent fast, Think how much they would save in warranty expense.

Same with my 92 W250. I didn't know until we got a GPS and my wife was fooling around with it on a long trip. Found out, that for every mile my odometer says I've gone, it's only .935 of a mile. I double-checked with mile-markers on the highway. That differnce makes a big difference in figuring fuel mileage. My truck has the original Gertrag trans, axle ratios, speedo-drive box, and stock size tires. So, what's up with Dodge? After the GPS thing, we later checked both our Ford diesel F250s and both are dead-on. Same with my Chevys.

I can honestly say that I have gotten 27 MPG, on long trips in a 92 Dodge/ Cummins 4X4 with 5 speed & 3.52 ratio. That truck just sips fuel. Under the same conditions, my 2001 Dually 4X4 /Cummins HO w/6 speed and 3.52 ratio gets around 16 to 18 MPG.

My dad also has a '97 Ram with Cummins, 2wd, 5spd. When it was new he got as high as 27mpg. Now with 160k miles he only gets about 24mpg highway.

An important factor would be that your trucks both have manual transmissions vs the auto in Mark`s truck. My current truck is an `04.5 with the 600 motor, auto tranny and 3.55 axles. It`s a 3500 quad 4x4 with an 8' box and an E-Z Dumper insert with headache rack that weighs 800# empty. If I am very conscious of the throttle I can squeak out 15-17mpg in mixed driving, highway I can do about 20. If I`m in the throttle too much I`ll see 12 mpg..... ..but it sure can be satisfying!

Is your friend from england? Perhaps he meant kilometers per gallon or kilometers per liter.... well... wait, even THAT would be way off!

20 mpg is the ONLY economy you're ever going to get, final, absolutely, definitely, no questions or arguments posed.

I am a big fan of the cummins engines, in fact I'm putting a 5.9 12V into a Ford Superduty right now. But even with the 3.42 (3.55 I can't remember) gear in the low rider 2wd 3/4ton the best those things got were the low 20's I have heard as high as 23 but that is it.
If you want to check though if the mileage is high like 300,00+ or it has been sitting a lot change the filter, check your boost pressure, put an intercooler on it, have the injectors checked for pop pressure and spray pattern or just buy a cool set of after market ones like the lucas prince of darkness injectors. Make sure your fuel filters are clean and you are running a good quality oil.

Do America a favor and make sure your friend doesn't do his own taxes. There is no way one of those trucks could get 30 mpg even if they were going down hill with a tail wind with the the clutch in. 20 mpg is something to be happy with.

Sorry markct, I`m afraid that your friend is a bullcrapper, 30-35mpg for a full size truck, even a mighty Cummins, is preposterous.

BTW, I`m a huge fan of the Cummins in my daily driver but anything over low 20s would be like a gift from God.

For some reason. The same vehicle can get more for gallon then others. Like in 1999 I bought a 99 Ford Excort 4 cylinder.
Running 65 mph in Missouri area. We.. well wife and I got 39 miles to a gallon that day. But on other days we average 37 to 38 miles. Others I knew with same car and engine got only 30 to 31. I can not explain how it happens but it does! :) Now I see goverment says all must get 35 in near furture. ... Heck I rememeber my dad having a 1954 Cad. that got 18 to 21 back in 1959 and was a better built car then todays. "Hummmmm" Who knows. Have a good day.
